This display/activity is intended to help the child/children identify their emotions and the experiences that trigger those emotions.

At the start of the day, one emotion is to be highlighted and discussed with the children. The children are then encouraged to tell someone if they think they experience that emotion during the day. The aim is for the children to become more introspective of their emotions, and more perceptive of the emotions of others.

As a group activity the children have the chance to learn from their peer’s experiences as well as their own.

Pack includes:

• Changeable display banner with space for different ‘Emotion of the day’ cards.

• Emotion of the day display cards for happy, sad, excited, worried, angry, confused, scared, surprised.

• Small A6 emotion cards to be placed around the setting as a reminder of the ‘Emotion of the day’.

Ideal for use within a classroom or preschool environment (but also adaptable as an individual resource for slightly younger children). Each child can colour in a set of footprints individually and then add their name (or have it added for them). After, the footprints can be placed along a classroom floor for lining up and every day they line up they are looking at their name. Four sheets which can either be used separately or put together as a booklet. Each sheet compares an aspect of life when an individual was a baby and now to demonstrate how we all change as we grow. The spaces on the sheets are intended for drawings, however photographs or writing may also be used. On the first/front cover sheet there is space for a child’s name and 2 separate boxes for a drawing/photo of them when they were a baby and now. The subsequent sheets have spaces to compare toys, food and where they sleep/used to sleep. Tasks can be completed within settings/school or given to children as a home learning challenge.

Pack of animal cards with sorting labels. Ideal for use as part of an interactive display or sorting activity or game. Differentiate for use with different ages of children by your selection of activity cards, the vocabulary you use and your use of questioning. You may like to select e.g. the headings ‘4 legs’, ‘2 legs’ and ‘0 legs’. Place them on the floor or a table and discuss with your child(ren) which animal cards should be placed under each of the headings. For some headings such as ‘Eats meat’, ‘Eats plants’ and ‘Eats both’ you may like to create your own venn diagram by using two hoops/looped skipping ropes on the floor or circles on paper which overlap in the middle. The 2 separate components go in each hoop e.g. ‘Eats meat’ and ‘Eats plants’ and the overlapping centre is where both characteristics are true. In this case ‘Eats both meat and plants’. If none of the characteristics mentioned are true for an animal, the animal card may be placed outside of the circles. This sorting activity is a great way to encourage children to observe animal characteristics closely. The active engagement with the subject matter means they are more likely to retain knowledge for example new vocabulary. Can you think of any other ways to sort these animals? Perhaps you could make your own heading cards?

Have great fun with your children whilst all acting out Autumn sights with this set of 8 Autumn Activity Challenge cards. Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Feed the Sparrow’ counting puzzles? Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number beside the sparrow with the corresponding number of hazelnuts to feed them.

Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.

Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.

Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the hazelnuts, counting as they go.

In addition, each number is also written as a word. For our youngest children, this adds to learning about text in the environment and how it has meaning. Our oldest children may start to recognise the words and associate them with the numbers. This will be beneficial for when they begin to read and write these words in subsequent years as they will have something to build on.

Chinese/Lunar New Year colouring sheets. 14 pages, including various New Year posters, pictures of the 12 zodiac animals, Chinese numbers 1-10 and Chinese food to colour. In conjunction with developing fine motor skills and expressive arts and design elements (e.g. the choice of colours), these colouring sheets can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language. When offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the images in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Younger children may point to familiar objects when prompted e.g. ‘Where’s the horse?’ and learn new words as you describe to them what is in the picture. As children progress, more ground may be covered such as ‘What colours have you used?’, ‘How many animals are there in this picture?’, ‘Which is your favourite picture?’, ‘Why do you like this picture the best?’, ‘Have you seen any Chinese/Lunar New Year decorations?’, ‘Where?’, ‘When?’, ‘Who were you with?’, ‘Shall we make some of our own?’ If children take their pictures home, further consolidation of new vocabulary may arise through additional communication with those at home.

Ideas…

• Place the 10 poster cards on display for your child(ren) to see. Give your child/each child one of the 10 activity cards. Encourage them to look at the posters and decide which one they think is inside their wrapped present. Encourage them to experiment with writing the label underneath.

• Alternatively challenge your child(ren) to imagine what they think is inside a present by giving them an activity card without letting them see the posters. This allows for a more open ended problem solving task, plus gives more freedom for children to practice the phonics skills they have at their disposal, by allowing them to sound out the word they have in mind without seeing the written answer.

Your children will love to use this as part of a ‘Colour Walk’ activity searching for the various Colours within settings/homes or out and about. Use once with mark making tools such as pencils and encourage children to take it home as a stimulus for talk at home. Colour walk tally chart/check list. Your children will love to use this as part of a Colour Walk/Hunt activity. What colours can you all spot in the environment as we walk around the local area?...Or as we walk around our setting/home/outdoor area? Encourage children to make a mark/line in the box next to a colour each time they see it. Children will begin to gain an understanding of tallying. Colour sorting game to aid learning and consolidation of colour recognition. Print colour names and cut out objects in order for children to match the objects to the correct colours. Laminate for multiple uses or use as a cut and stick activity (to also strengthen fine motor skills) for children to take home and discuss with their families. Why not set up an invitation to play using these hard hat counting puzzles? Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number with the corresponding number of hard hats. Ideal for use within a construction/building theme.

Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.

Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further game, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.

Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the hats, counting as they go.
