Why not use this fun farm animals and their young puzzle game to introduce your children to or consolidate their knowledge of farm animals? Cut each puzzle along the line in the middle and invite your children to match each farm animal with its offspring. Why not extend learning by discussing similarities and differences between the older and younger animals and also between the different types of animals? Extend children’s vocabulary by describing animal body parts such as tail, hooves, paws, fur, snout, etc. Ask questions such as ‘Which animal has the longest/shortest tail?’

Use these ‘Growing Sunflower Cards’ as part of an interactive display or invitation to play activity. Children may enjoy moving the cards around to place them in the correct order to show how the sunflower seed grows into a plant. These endless puzzles are perfect to show the cyclic nature of life cycles. For example in the first instance the frog puzzle may be placed in the order ‘frogspawn’, ‘tadpole’, ‘froglet’ and then ‘frog’. To demonstrate to children that the frog then lays frogspawn, the ‘frogspawn’ piece may be brought to connect with the ‘frog’ piece at the end and thus continuing the cycle. This process can continue for as long as you like, bringing the ‘tadpole’ piece to then end and then the ‘froglet’ piece and so on!

This ‘Minibeast Hunt Activity Pack’ includes a variety of resources to help inspire and engage adults and children alike.
The activity card plan breaks down key elements of the activity into sections: You will need, Activity description, Extra challenge, Development Matters statements (from Understanding the World), Key vocabulary, Key questions and Additional resources.

‘Signs of Spring’ cards. Ideal for use as part of a Spring display to visually highlight the changes that happen following Winter. Cards can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language. When used as part of a display or offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the cards in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Younger children may point to familiar objects when prompted e.g. ‘Where’s the tree?’ and learn new words as you describe to them what is in the picture. As children progress, more ground may be covered such as ‘What colours can you see?’, ‘How many ducklings are there in this picture?’, ‘Which is your favourite card?’, ‘Why do you like this picture the best?’, ‘What do you think this tree would look like in the Winter?’, ‘Have you seen any of these signs of Spring?’, ‘Where?’, ‘When?’, ‘Who were you with?’, ‘Shall we go outside and see which of them we can find?’

Each poster (1-6) displays the numeral on a central tree. Surrounding the tree is a raincloud with raindrops, a daffodil with bees, a magnifying glass examining ladybirds and a dice, which each subitise the number in different ways.

These Spring Senses Poem mark making prompt sheets will help encourage your children to draw and/or write about their senses and start to get a feel for poetry…perhaps after the children have been on a Spring walk! Children can complete them at varying levels. For example, your youngest children may be able to tell you what they see or hear and you can scribe a single word in each box. Consolidate children’s knowledge of Spring sights whilst playing a fun game of ‘snap’ (or a memory game of ‘picking up pairs’ if you only print 2 of each card) with this set of large snap cards. These versatile butterfly number sheets could be used in a number of ways. Challenge your children to finger paint the right number of marks on each butterfly/wing. Alternatively, use as a playdough mat where the children might like to make the corresponding number of shapes to place on the wings, mould the number at the top or even the entire butterfly. The sheets could also be used in a similar way using loose parts or even collage materials whereby children may like to cut and stick various shapes that they create themselves. You may even like to provide children with basic shapes to place or stick onto the wings so that the children not only learn about numbers and 1:1 correspondence counting but also specific shapes you feel they are ready to begin recognising and describing. Equally, the sheets could simply be offered to children with colouring tools such as pencils, crayons or pens.

This resource pack is easily adapted for any setting. For example the youngest children will get used to recognising their name & picture combination and moving it to the correct place with help. Children soon love the responsibility of doing this independently. Excellent tool for encouraging children to recognise their name before attending school and ideal for use in school to consolidate that knowledge and encourage independence.
