The children can then dig in the sand to find and identify the shapes on the fossils.

Handy addition sheets using 2D shapes. Visual representation of shapes allows children to use 1:1 correspondence to count the object and practice writing the correct number in the appropriate box. Combine objects like stacking blocks and cups. Put objects inside others and take them out again.
Build with a range of resources.

Birth to 3 - Examples to support learning
Provide inset puzzles and jigsaws at different levels of difficulty.
Provide blocks and boxes to play freely with and build with, indoors and outside.
Provide patterned material – gingham, polka dots, stripes etc. – and small objects to arrange in patterns. Use words like ‘repeated’ and ‘the same’ over and over.
Encourage babies and young toddlers to play freely with a wide range of objects - toddlers engage spontaneously in mathematics during nearly half of every minute of free play. Suggestions: when appropriate, sensitively join in and comment on:
interestingly shaped objects like vegetables, wooden pegs, spoons, pans, corks, cones, balls
pots and pans, boxes and objects to put in them, shape sorters
stacking cups: hiding one, building them into a tower, nesting them and lining them up
3 & 4 Year Olds
Combine shapes to make new ones - an arch, a bigger triangle etc.
Talk about and identify the patterns around them. For example: stripes on clothes, designs on rugs and wallpaper. Use informal language like ‘pointy’, ‘spotty’, ‘blobs’ etc.
Talk about and explore 2D and 3D shapes (for example, circles, rectangles, triangles and cuboids) using informal and mathematical language: ‘sides’, ‘corners’; ‘straight’, ‘flat’, ‘round’.
Select shapes appropriately: flat surfaces for building, a triangular prism for a roof etc.
3 & 4 Year Olds - Examples to support learning
Encourage children to talk informally about shape properties using words like ‘sharp corner’, ‘pointy’ or ‘curvy’. Talk about shapes as you play with them: “We need a piece with a straight edge.”
Provide a variety of construction materials like blocks and interlocking bricks. Provide denmaking materials. Allow children to play freely with these materials, outdoors and inside. When appropriate, talk about the shapes and how their properties suit the purpose.
Encourage children to play freely with blocks, shapes, shape puzzles and shape-sorters.
Provide shapes that combine to make other shapes, such as pattern blocks and interlocking shapes, for children to play freely with. When appropriate, discuss the different designs that children make.
Use tidy-up time to match blocks to silhouettes or fit things in containers, describing and naming shapes. Suggestion: “Where does this triangular one /cylinder /cuboid go?”
Provide patterns from different cultures, such as fabrics.
Occasionally suggest challenges, so that children build increasingly more complex constructions.
Reception
Select, rotate and manipulate shapes to develop spatial reasoning skills.
Compose and decompose shapes so that children recognise a shape can have other shapes within it, just as numbers can.
Reception - Examples to support learning
Provide high quality pattern and building sets, including pattern blocks, tangrams, building blocks and magnetic construction tiles, as well as found materials.
Challenge children to copy increasingly complex 2D pictures and patterns with these 3D resources, guided by knowledge of learning trajectories: “I bet you can’t add an arch to that,” or “Maybe tomorrow someone will build a staircase.”
Investigate how shapes can be combined to make new shapes: for example, two triangles can be put together to make a square. Encourage children to predict what shapes they will make when paper is folded. Wonder aloud how many ways there are to make a hexagon with pattern blocks. Find 2D shapes within 3D shapes, including through printing or shadow play.
Teach children to solve a range of jigsaws of increasing challenge.

Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Egg Counting Puzzles’?
Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number with the corresponding number of eggs. Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.
Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.
Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the eggs, counting as they go.
In addition, each number is also written as a word. For our youngest children, this adds to learning about text in the environment and how it has meaning. Our oldest children may start to recognise the words and associate them with the numbers. This will be beneficial for when they begin to read and write these words in subsequent years as they will have something to build on.

Fun scavenger hunt game for in or outdoors!
Fairy cards (Minibeast Fairy, Water Fairy, Tree Fairy, Fruit Fairy, Flower Fairy & Earth Fairy) are designed to be hidden for children to find.
You may like to simply encourage your children to search until they find all six fairies.
Alternatively (or after), for an additional challenge, you may like to draw children’s attention to the colours, shapes and numbers on each card. Perhaps you could cut them out and display them on a bedroom wall or perhaps a fridge? Your children may even love to cut out the cards themselves using child scissors, (under appropriate supervision) and this action may help to keep them engaged further. Children may be more likely to be engaged with the activity of reading the card once they have cut it out and placed it onto their own personal display.
Print out 2 different themed packs of the same words and challenge your child(ren) to match the pairs of words and read them once they have found a match. (You can always print more or less cards to a page by altering the settings at your end when you print.)
Use in conjunction with our READ IT, MAKE IT, WRITE IT MAT.
Play ‘Beat the Parent/Teacher’ - who can read or find the word quickest? Make it fun!
Lay out a selection of 4 word cards. Begin with them all starting with different initial sounds, e.g. ‘dad’, ‘get’, ‘put’ & ‘at’. Say a word from the selection and challenge your child to find it. This activity focuses in on just the initial sound. As your child becomes more confident you may like to challenge them further by adding a pair which have the same initial sound so that they then are required to read more of the word, e.g. the selection becomes ‘dad’, ‘get’ ‘at’ & ‘and’.
Go on a ‘Word Search’ - See if you can find the words in books, environmental text, tablet games, board games, etc.

Colour mixing experiment sheets with a heart theme. For example, paint the first heart white and the second red. Then mix the two colours together and paint the bottom heart in the resulting pink colour. You may want to repeat this for a few different mixtures and make a ‘Colour Mixing’ display. Explore size and shape with this loose parts investigation. Print both the ‘big’ and the ‘small’ heart. Describe the shapes. Perhaps extend older children by asking ‘How are they similar?’ ‘How are they different?’ With younger children focus on the vocab ‘big’ and ‘small’. Why not investigate how many e.g. duplo bricks you can fit in each and then compare the amounts? Adapt for different ages by using smaller or larger loose parts. Why not involve a tool such as tweezers in the process to develop fine motor skills? For our youngest children these templates could also be used as a stimulus to sort small and big objects…e.g a table of objects with a small and big version of each and the children place the objects next to the appropriate heart.

Children to take turns turning over cards to try to find the correct numbers in the correct colour to win the game. Two versions of the game - 1-5 and 2, 4, 6, 8, 10. The number cards included within the game are made with a patterned tab style back to fold over before lamination. This makes for a sturdier product and means that when the card is face down you are unable to see what the number is.

Set of 32 cards. Use appropriate cards for your children in an invitation to play or adult led activity. These cards may be used in a number of ways. Placed facing up on a table, children can simply match up the pairs placing them next to each other or alternatively, they may want to collect them as they go. A further challenge could be a memory and turn taking game of ‘Picking up Pairs’. The cards are made with a tab which can be folded before lamination in order to strengthen the final product. This also means that when turned over, the pattern on the front can not be seen.
