Emoji Emotion Cards to be used for a variety of purposes.
They can be used as part of a display, given to individual children to enable them to voluntarily express their feelings or as a way to respond to adult questioning in discussions about how various situations may make us feel (1:1 or group).
They could be used in whole class, group or 1:1 to prompt role play depicting situations which evoke a specific emotion and this can then lead to discussions about how to deal with the emotion in question.

It can often be difficult for children (and anyone) to deal with feelings of worry and anxiety. Once these feelings become overwhelmingly strong, it can be difficult to get passed them.
These 2 sheets are designed for children and adults to discuss what helps a particular child to feel happy when they are worried. This could be things like cuddling a particular soft toy, colouring, playing Lego, reading a book, etc. Once strategies have been decided, the child could make marks in the box(es) that will remind them of this strategy when they need to use it. Alternatively, adults may create picture prompts to place in the box(es).

‘Emotion’ Resources in ‘All About Me’ and ‘Mental Health’
A key part of safeguarding mental health is understanding, identifying and dealing with emotions. We can help children to identify their emotions by naming feelings whilst they are having them, taking part in activities such as our ‘Emotion of the Day’, talking about what an emotion looks like when we experience it and what feelings we experience in response to certain situations, stories, art, etc. A large part of dealing with negative emotions is understanding that they will pass and exploring things that we can all do to help them pass more quickly. We have some great new ‘Mood Booster’ resources which we hope will help with this!

This display/activity is intended to help the child/children identify their emotions and the experiences that trigger those emotions.
At the start of the day, one emotion is to be highlighted and discussed with the children. The children are then encouraged to tell someone if they think they experience that emotion during the day. The aim is for the children to become more introspective of their emotions, and more perceptive of the emotions of others.
As a group activity the children have the chance to learn from their peer’s experiences as well as their own.
Pack includes:
• Changeable display banner with space for different ‘Emotion of the day’ cards.
• Emotion of the day display cards for happy, sad, excited, worried, angry, confused, scared, surprised.
• Small A6 emotion cards to be placed around the setting as a reminder of the ‘Emotion of the day’.

We created this ‘Why is Teddy sad?’ pack in order for you to be able to explore with children how sometimes something may feel wrong inside when there are no obvious cuts, bruises, etc.
As well as investigating the feeling of ‘sadness’ by talking about what might cause us to feel sad and what it actually feels like, this pack could also be a doorway to talking about mental health. It also aids in the mindfulness practice of recognising emotions.

This display is intended to be an interactive self-registration display that can evolve throughout the day. The children can find and add their names to the emoji that expresses how they are feeling at the start of the day and then they are encouraged to change the position of their name as they see fit as the day progresses. It aids in the mindfulness practice of recognising emotions.
An adult can quickly check to see how the group is feeling and follow up on anyone who may have indicated that they are sad, angry, etc.
Two sizes of emoji are included so that the display can fit different settings. Large (p4-9) and Small (p10-12).
For name tags, print p13 as many times as needed.

The cards can be used as part of an input about emotions and feelings. The intention is that the cards would be held with the image facing the child/children and the prompts facing the adult. The activity should help the child/children think carefully about what each emotion feels like to them when they experience them. For example, when we are happy we may feel like smiling, dancing, laughing, etc. This process aids in the mindfulness practice of recognising emotions.

These playdough mats are perfect for gaining an insight into the day to day feelings of those in your care. Useful as a tool to explore feelings 1:1 with a child. However, they may be especially useful as a fine motor activity within a setting/school which also allows adults to tell at a glance the feelings of children within a group. This could be a particularly beneficial tool in assessing the feelings of those settling into a new setting. In addition, it aids in the mindfulness practice of recognising emotions.

Children with Special Educational Needs and Disability can often experience the world in a different way to most. It can also sometimes be difficult for these children to express their feelings concerning this.
This resource is intended to help children and their parents/carers/teachers identify sources of anxiety and distress and also enjoyment. Strategies can then be put in place surrounding these findings.
(Please note that the size of the docx file means that it has been split into 2 parts. You will need to download both.)

Related Special Dates
Smile Power Day
Smile Power Day is celebrated annually on 15th June and is recognised in the UK as well as internationally. The day emphasises the positive impact of smiling on personal well-being and social connections.
What Is Smile Power Day?
Smile Power Day encourages individuals to harness the power of a smile to uplift themselves and those around them. Smiling has been shown to release endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin—neurotransmitters that promote feelings of happiness and reduce stress.
Observance in the UK
In the UK, Smile Power Day aligns with National Smile Month, which runs from 15th May to 15th June. Organised by the Oral Health Foundation, National Smile Month is the UK's largest oral health campaign, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of good oral hygiene and its impact on overall health.
Ways to Celebrate
Share a Smile: Make a conscious effort to smile at friends, family, colleagues, and even strangers.
Self-Reflection: Smile at yourself in the mirror to boost self-confidence and mood.
Acts of Kindness: Engage in activities that bring joy to others, such as volunteering or writing positive notes.
Social Media: Use the hashtag #NationalSmilePowerDay to spread positivity online.
The Science Behind Smiling
Smiling can have several benefits:
Mood Enhancement: Activates the release of neurotransmitters that improve mood.
Stress Reduction: Lowers heart rate and blood pressure.
Social Connection: Fosters trust and approachability in social interactions.
Immune Support: May strengthen the immune system by reducing stress-induced hormones.
Whether through a simple grin or a hearty laugh, Smile Power Day serves as a reminder of the profound impact a smile can have on our lives and the lives of others.
World Emoji Day
World Emoji Day is celebrated annually on July 17th to honour the impact of emojis on digital communication and to highlight their role in modern expression.
📅 Why July 17th?
The date was chosen because July 17th is the date displayed on the 📅 calendar emoji on Apple devices. This design choice references the launch of Apple's iCal calendar application on July 17th, 2002. Recognising this, Jeremy Burge, the founder of Emojipedia, established World Emoji Day in 2014 to celebrate emojis and their influence on communication.
🎉 How Is It Celebrated?
World Emoji Day has grown into a global event featuring:
Emoji Announcements: Companies like Apple and Google often unveil new emojis or updates to existing ones.
World Emoji Awards: Organised by Emojipedia, these awards recognise popular and anticipated emojis each year.
Cultural Events: Institutions like the British Library have hosted discussions on the evolution and significance of emojis.
Public Celebrations: Landmarks such as the Empire State Building have been illuminated in "emoji yellow" to mark the occasion.
🌍 The Significance of Emojis
Emojis have transformed the way people communicate, adding emotional nuance and clarity to digital conversations. They serve as a universal language, bridging gaps across cultures and languages, and continue to evolve to represent diverse experiences and identities.

World Smile Day
“As is well known by now throughout the world Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley face in 1963. That image went on to become the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet.
As the years passed Harvey Ball became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol, and how its original meaning and intent had become lost in the constant repetition of the marketplace. Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day®. He thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion. Harvey’s idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we. He declared that the first Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day®. Ever since that first World Smile Day® held in 1999, it has continued every year in Smiley's hometown of Worcester, MA and around the world.
After Harvey died in 2001, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was created to honour his name and memory. The Foundation continues as the official sponsor of World Smile Day® each year.”
