06 · A few useful starting points

Continuous provision: common questions

Choose one manageable next step for your environment, resources or adult interactions.

What is continuous provision?

It is the dependable environment, materials and opportunities children can return to over time. Familiar provision lets children revisit experiences, practise, make connections and develop their own ideas, with adults noticing and responding.

How is an enhancement different?

An enhancement adds a useful possibility to familiar provision, such as a different collection, story prop, material or problem. It can respond to an interest or a teaching purpose without replacing the whole area.

Do we need a separate space for every area?

No. Spaces and materials can serve several purposes. A home corner may include writing and maths; blocks can support small-world stories. Choose a manageable arrangement for your room, outdoor space or home.

Where should we start?

Choose one area children already use. Notice what they choose, revisit or find difficult, then review the materials, access and adult support. A small adjustment may be more useful than printing a whole new set.
