Preschool Environment & Continuous Provision Map Audit Pack
(3–4 Years)
Audit, mapping and reflective tools for high-quality EYFS provision
A practical curriculum and pedagogy document for Preschool (3–4 Years)
(This document will be available for download by: March 31st 2026)
What this document is
The Preschool Environment & Provision Map Audit Pack is a practical, editable toolkit designed to support practitioners and leaders in reviewing, refining and intentionally shaping continuous provision.
Rather than prescribing what provision should look like, this pack supports professional reflection, shared understanding and purposeful decision-making. It helps teams articulate why an area exists, what learning lives there, and how it supports all children, including those with SEND.
This pack brings together:
Environment auditing
Continuous provision mapping
SEND-inclusive adaptation planning
It is designed to sit alongside daily practice, not replace it, and supports improvement through small, meaningful adjustments, not constant change.
Who this document is for
This document is particularly useful for:
Preschool practitioners (3–4 years)
EYFS leaders, managers and room leads
SEND and inclusion leads
Childminders and packaway / small-space settings
New teams building consistent practice
Settings preparing for inspection or internal review
It is equally valuable in:
Full-day nurseries
Committee-run preschools
Church hall and packaway provision
Childminding and mixed-age settings
What this document helps you do
This pack helps you to:
Audit your environment without over-documentation
Identify what is working — and protect it
Make provision decisions based on children’s needs and interests
Clarify the purpose of each learning area
Align indoor and outdoor provision intentionally
Support SEND and sensory access proactively
Improve consistency across practitioners and rooms
Support leadership conversations with clarity and confidence
It reframes auditing as reflection and refinement, not judgement.
What the pack includes
The pack contains four inter-connected audit and mapping tools, designed to be used flexibly:
A1 — Quick Environment Audit (1 page)
A short, checklist-style overview for weekly or monthly reflection, ideal for leadership meetings and quick quality checks.
A2 — Deep-Dive Area Reflection
A more detailed, termly reflection tool to support thoughtful improvement planning within individual areas.
B1 — Continuous Provision Map (Indoor Areas)
An editable, area-by-area template to define purpose, learning opportunities, vocabulary, adult role and inclusion considerations.
B2 — Outdoor Continuous Provision Map
Aligned mapping for outdoor provision, including risk, weather use, stewardship and gross motor learning.
B3 — Packaway / Small-Room Provision Map
A condensed one-page version designed specifically for mobile, shared-space and childminding settings.
B4 — SEND & Inclusion Adaptation Overlay
A flexible overlay tool to support adjustments for individual or emerging needs — reinforcing that adaptation is access, not additional demand.
How this fits within our Preschool curriculum framework
The Environment & Provision Map Audit Pack forms a key part of our Preschool (3–4 Years) Curriculum & Pedagogy Framework, sitting alongside:
Universal Continuous Provision Pack
Preschool Medium-Term Theme Packs (6-week core themes)
Mini Theme Micro Packs (responsive planning)
Practitioner Guidance Posters (child-led, adult-led, language, interaction)
Skills Progression Ladders
Curriculum Intent, Implementation & Impact documentation
Together, these documents support a shared philosophy:
Continuous provision is intentional, not accidental
Environments communicate curriculum intent
Adults teach through interaction and design
Inclusion is planned, not retrofitted
Change is purposeful, not performative
In practice: Many settings use this pack during staff meetings, termly reviews or SEND planning discussions, ensuring that environments evolve with children, not for paperwork.
