A six-week, play-based curriculum theme exploring living things, care and connection with the natural world (Commonly used in Spring 2)
(This document will be available for download by: March 31st 2026)
What this document is
This document is a six-week Preschool curriculum theme pack for children aged 3–4 years, designed to support confident, developmentally appropriate EYFS practice.
Animals & Habitats uses children’s natural fascination with animals and the living world as a conceptual lens for learning. Rather than delivering facts, the theme supports children to observe, question, care, compare and represent what they notice about animals, their habitats and their needs.
The pack provides clear curriculum intent and progression across the seven areas of learning, while remaining fully responsive to:
children’s interests and questions
local environments and community contexts
SEND-inclusive, play-based practice
It is designed to support professional judgement, not replace statutory guidance, and aligns with the EYFS Statutory Framework and Development Matters.
Who this document is for
This document is particularly useful for:
Preschool practitioners working with children aged 3–4
EYFS teachers delivering a play-based curriculum
EYFS leaders and curriculum leads
Settings developing a coherent, inspection-ready curriculum narrative
What this document helps you do
This theme pack supports practitioners to:
Deliver a coherent six-week curriculum sequence rooted in curiosity and care
Build language for describing, comparing and questioning living things
Support empathy, responsibility and gentle handling through everyday play
Use habitats as meaningful contexts for maths, literacy, movement and art
Plan adult-led inputs that are short, purposeful and responsive
Enhance continuous provision with intentional, nature-led provocations
Confidently articulate curriculum intent, implementation and impact
It helps children become curious observers and thoughtful protectors of the world around them — not passive receivers of information.
How this fits within our Preschool curriculum framework
This document forms part of our Preschool (3–4 Years) Curriculum & Pedagogy Framework, which is structured around six progressive, six-week themes across the academic year.
The Spring 2 theme:
Builds on Spring 1: Journeys & Transport (movement, direction, exploration)
Deepens children’s understanding of place, environment and change
Prepares children for later themes exploring growth, transformation and systems
It works alongside:
Whole-Setting Curriculum Map (Birth–5)
Preschool Curriculum Intent, Implementation & Impact Statement
Preschool Curriculum Map by Term
Mini Theme Micro Packs (used responsively within or alongside this theme)
Skills Progression Ladders (language, early maths, writing, PSED, motor skills)
Together, these documents ensure the Preschool curriculum is:
coherent and progressive
inclusive and SEND-first
play-based and language-rich
inspection-ready without being data-driven
This document is part of our EYFS Curriculum & Pedagogy Membership (Professional), which provides full access to age-specific curriculum frameworks, planning guidance, assessment tools and leadership support.
