Early Writing Purpose Mini Session Bank
Preschool 3-4 Years
Meaningful, play-based emergent writing for Preschool
(This document will be available for download by: March 31st 2026)
What this document is
This document is a structured set of six adult-led mini sessions designed to support early writing development in Preschool (3–4 years) through purpose, meaning and communication, rather than formal letter formation.
The pack focuses on why children write before how they write, introducing writing as a tool for thinking, remembering, organising ideas and communicating with others. It aligns with the EYFS Statutory Framework and Development Matters, and reflects current best practice in early literacy pedagogy.
This document is intended to support professional judgement and high-quality practice. It does not replace statutory guidance, nor does it promote formal handwriting or phonics teaching in Preschool.
Who this document is for
This pack is designed for:
Preschool practitioners working with children aged 3–4
EYFS leaders and managers responsible for curriculum design
Nursery and sessional setting teams

What is included in this pack

Lists – writing to remember and organise
Labels – writing to name and identify
Messages – writing to communicate with others

Tickets and receipts – writing to support role-play and social negotiation
Each session includes:
