Fine-Motor & Mark-Making Mini Session Bank
Preschool 3-4 Years
A sequenced set of adult-led mini sessions building the physical foundations for confident early writing
(This document is partially available for download. All remaining components will be available by: March 31st 2026)
What this document is
This document provides a carefully sequenced bank of 18 short, adult-led mini sessions designed to develop the physical, motor and cognitive foundations children need before formal writing begins.
The sessions focus on how writing readiness develops in young children, prioritising:
core and shoulder stability
wrist rotation and fluidity
hand strength and tool control
pre-writing patterns
developmentally appropriate early letter-like marks
This is not a handwriting scheme and does not promote premature letter formation.
Instead, it reflects current EYFS and occupational-therapy-informed best practice, supporting children to build strength, control, confidence and meaning before any formal writing expectations.
The document is intended to support professional judgement and high-quality teaching, not to replace statutory guidance.
Who this document is for
This document is designed for:
Preschool practitioners working with children aged 3–4
EYFS leads and curriculum managers
Room leaders responsible for Physical Development and early writing
SEND leads supporting fine-motor development
Settings seeking a developmentally appropriate approach to writing readiness
It is particularly valuable for teams looking to move away from premature handwriting expectations while still demonstrating intentional, progressive teaching.
What this document helps you do
This document helps practitioners and leaders to:
Build a clear progression from whole-body movement to controlled mark-making
Deliver short, purposeful adult-led sessions that feed directly into play
Strengthen children’s physical readiness for writing without rushing outcomes
Align fine-motor development with Continuous Provision and child-led learning
Support SEND learners through inclusive, alternative sensory routes
Articulate early writing pedagogy confidently to families and inspectors
Ensure teaching is evidence-informed, not worksheet-led
