What this document is

This document is a six-week Preschool Medium Term Plan theme pack designed for children aged 3–4 years, centred on water as a powerful, everyday and awe-inspiring element of the world.

Water World supports children to explore:

  • water through play, investigation and observation

  • early scientific ideas such as floating, sinking, flow and change

  • water’s role in weather, geography and daily life

  • emotional regulation and sensory experience

  • safety and care around water in age-appropriate ways

The pack prioritises continuous provision and sensory play as the main vehicle for learning, with short, purposeful adult-led inputs introduced only when they add value. It aligns fully with the EYFS Statutory Framework and Development Matters, and is designed to support professional judgement rather than prescribe activities.

Who this document is for

This document is particularly useful for:

  • Preschool practitioners working with children aged 3–4

  • EYFS teachers delivering a play-based, inquiry-led curriculum

  • EYFS leaders planning coherent end-of-year provision

  • Settings supporting diverse sensory, language and emotional needs

What this document helps you do

This theme pack helps practitioners to:

  • Deliver a coherent six-week curriculum sequence rooted in real-world exploration

  • Use water play as a high-impact, self-differentiating learning environment

  • Develop early scientific thinking through cause and effect

  • Build rich process-based vocabulary (pour, drip, flow, melt, float)

  • Support emotional regulation through calming sensory experiences

  • Teach water safety and environmental responsibility without fear-based messaging

  • Plan provision that is inclusive for EAL, SEND and pre-verbal learners

  • Articulate curriculum intent, implementation and impact with clarity

It supports children to engage deeply, revisit ideas repeatedly, and develop respect for water as both playful and powerful.

How this fits within our Preschool curriculum framework

This document forms part of our Preschool (3–4 Years) Curriculum & Pedagogy Framework, which is structured around six progressive, six-week themes across the academic year.

Water World:

  • Concludes the yearly curriculum by deepening understanding of change, movement and environment

  • Builds directly on Summer 1: How Things Grow & Change

  • Consolidates scientific thinking, language and independence developed throughout the year

  • Provides a calm yet engaging foundation for transition into Reception

It works alongside:

  • Whole-Setting Curriculum Map (Birth–5)

  • Preschool Curriculum Intent, Implementation & Impact Statement

  • Preschool Curriculum Map by Term

  • Skills Progression Ladders (language, maths, writing, PSED, motor development)

  • Mini Theme Micro Packs (used responsively within the six-week theme)

Together, these documents ensure the Preschool curriculum is:

  • progressive and coherent

  • sensory-aware and inclusive

  • language-rich and play-led

  • environmentally responsible

  • inspection-ready without being performative

This document is part of our EYFS Curriculum & Pedagogy Membership (Professional), which provides full access to age-specific curriculum frameworks, planning guidance, assessment tools and leadership support.
