A two-week, flexible mini theme designed to strengthen oral storytelling, empathy and imagination through play.
(Available Now with Professional Membership)
What this document is
The Traditional Tales Mini Theme Micro Pack is a short, low-prep planning resource that supports children to explore stories as living, changeable narratives, rather than fixed texts to memorise.
This mini theme places oral storytelling, retelling and reimagining at the heart of literacy development, recognising that children become confident readers and writers through talk, play, memory and imagination first.
It is designed to be used responsively, either within or between your six core Preschool themes, and is particularly effective when:
Children repeat familiar story scripts in play
Role play becomes rich and sustained
Children ask questions about what is “real” or “pretend”
Imaginative language and confidence need boosting
Who this is for
Preschool practitioners working with children aged 3–4
EYFS teams prioritising oral language as the foundation of literacy
Settings embedding cultural capital without tokenism
Practitioners supporting confidence, empathy and expressive language
SENCOs and inclusion leads supporting varied communication styles
What this document helps you do
Support children to understand story structure (beginning, middle, end)
Build vocabulary through repeated, meaningful narrative patterns
Encourage empathy by exploring characters’ feelings and motives
Develop sequencing, prediction and cause-and-effect thinking
Validate oral storytelling as real, valuable literacy
Empower children to adapt, invent and change stories confidently

Low-prep and play-based
Designed to sit naturally within continuous provision
How this fits within our Preschool curriculum
This Mini Theme Micro Pack forms part of our wider Preschool (3–4 Years) Curriculum & Pedagogy framework.
Mini themes are not stand-alone topics or rigid fortnightly plans.
They are intentional curriculum enhancers, used when children show interest, confidence or readiness to deepen learning.
They sit alongside:
The six core Preschool curriculum themes
Continuous provision and role play
In-the-moment planning
Observe → Assess → Plan cycles
This ensures storytelling remains authentic, inclusive and responsive, while building strong foundations for later reading comprehension.
Our approach to Traditional Tales
We do not treat traditional tales as:
Scripts to memorise
Moral lessons to enforce
Or cultural artefacts frozen in time
Instead, we treat them as:
Shared stories
Problem-solving frameworks
Emotional rehearsal spaces
Invitations to imagine and adapt
Children are encouraged to:
↪ Change the character
↪ Change the setting
↪ Change the problem
↪ Change the ending
Because being able to change a story means truly understanding it.
