Preschool Maths Small-Group Session Bank
24 Developmentally Appropriate Maths Sessions for Preschool (3–4 Years)
(This document is partially available for download. All remaining components will be available by: March 31st 2026)
What this document is
This document is a complete bank of 24 short, high-quality maths small-group sessions designed specifically for Preschool children aged 3–4 years.
It provides a carefully sequenced progression across the core foundations of early mathematics, supporting children to develop conceptual understanding, mathematical language and confidence through hands-on, play-based experiences.
The sessions are:
brief (5–8 minutes)
adult-guided but play-led in approach
rooted in Development Matters and current UK EYFS best practice
designed to feed directly back into Continuous Provision rather than replace it
This document supports professional judgement and reflective practice. It does not replace statutory guidance or prescribe rigid outcomes.
Who this document is for
This document is intended for:
Preschool practitioners working with children aged 3–4
EYFS room leaders and curriculum leads
Nursery managers and setting leaders
Childminders delivering a Preschool-equivalent curriculum
Settings seeking consistency and progression in early maths practice
It is particularly useful for teams aiming to strengthen maths pedagogy without introducing formal or developmentally inappropriate teaching.
What this document helps you do
This session bank supports settings to:
deliver consistent, high-quality maths teaching across the Preschool year
ensure progression across early mathematical concepts without rushing formal methods
support staff confidence in adult-led maths interactions
embed maths learning within play and Continuous Provision
evidence a clear, intentional maths curriculum for inspection conversations
reduce workload through ready-to-use, well-sequenced sessions
The focus is on understanding before recording, reasoning before recall, and language before symbols.
How this pack is structured
The 24 sessions are organised into six developmental strands:
Subitising
Counting Principles
Comparing Quantities
Composition of Number
Spatial & Shape
Measures & Pattern
Each session includes:
a clear conceptual focus
practitioner guidance on adult language and interaction
adaptations and SEND considerations
assessment prompts linked to the OAP cycle
suggestions for how learning continues in Continuous Provision
No worksheets, formal recording or premature formalisation are included.
