What this document is

This document is a practitioner-facing guidance resource that introduces five carefully chosen sentence stems designed to extend children’s thinking through everyday conversation and play.

Five Sentence Stems for Preschool Practitioners focuses on how adults speak, not what children produce. It supports high-quality EYFS practice by modelling language that encourages reasoning, prediction, reflection, memory and storytelling — without turning interactions into questioning or testing.

The document is intended to be used as:

  • a staff prompt

  • a reflection tool

  • a shared language guide across the team

It supports professional judgement and complements, rather than replaces, statutory guidance.

This guidance is particularly useful for:

  • Preschool practitioners working with 3–4 year olds

  • Key persons supporting sustained shared thinking

  • EYFS teachers and early years educators

  • New or developing staff building confidence in adult interaction

  • Use observation-led language rather than closed questioning

  • Create challenge without pressure or performance
