What this document is

This document is a comprehensive Early Reading and Phase 1 phonics guidance pack for Preschool (3–4 years), rooted firmly in Development Matters, current EYFS best practice and evidence-informed pedagogy.

It focuses on the true foundations of reading — listening, sound awareness, vocabulary, story comprehension and oral language — rather than premature letter–sound teaching.

The pack supports practitioners to:

• understand what early reading actually looks like in Preschool

• embed Phase 1 phonics naturally through play and interaction

• build the language and comprehension skills that underpin Reception phonics success

It is non-statutory and designed to support professional judgement. It does not replace the EYFS Statutory Framework or a school’s Reception phonics programme.
