Early Phonics & Early Reading Pack | Preschool (3–4 Years)
Building the foundations for confident readers — without rushing phonics
(Aspects of this component are available | Full completion by March 31st 2026)
What this document is
This document is a comprehensive Early Reading and Phase 1 phonics guidance pack for Preschool (3–4 years), rooted firmly in Development Matters, current EYFS best practice and evidence-informed pedagogy.
It focuses on the true foundations of reading — listening, sound awareness, vocabulary, story comprehension and oral language — rather than premature letter–sound teaching.
The pack supports practitioners to:
understand what early reading actually looks like in Preschool
embed Phase 1 phonics naturally through play and interaction
build the language and comprehension skills that underpin Reception phonics success
It is non-statutory and designed to support professional judgement. It does not replace the EYFS Statutory Framework or a school’s Reception phonics programme.
Who this document is for
This pack is ideal for:
Preschool practitioners (3–4 years)
EYFS teachers and teaching assistants
Room leaders and literacy leads
SENCOs supporting early communication and reading
Settings reviewing or strengthening early reading provision
Practitioners seeking clarity around what not to teach yet
It is particularly valuable for mixed-experience teams and settings wanting consistency in early reading practice.
What this document helps you do
This pack helps you to:
Understand Phase 1 phonics clearly and confidently
Avoid inappropriate formal phonics or worksheets in Preschool
Embed sound awareness and early reading through Continuous Provision
Use high-quality adult language to extend vocabulary and comprehension
Support children’s listening, attention and oral blending skills
Identify authentic early reading behaviours in play
Provide SEND- and EAL-inclusive early reading experiences
Communicate your early reading approach clearly to parents and inspectors
It reframes early reading as language-first, play-rich and developmentally appropriate.
What the pack includes
This pack brings together:
A clear explanation of Phase 1 phonics and its seven aspects
Guidance on early reading and comprehension behaviours
Adult interaction prompts for sound play, storytime and provision
Practical examples of embedding early reading across Continuous Provision
SEND-inclusive early reading strategies
A parent-facing home learning leaflet
An early reading vocabulary bank
A printable poster: The 6 Foundations of Early Reading
In addition, the pack can also include:
A Phase 1, Vocabulary & Early Comprehension Curriculum System
(24 short, play-based sessions)
This optional system supports settings that want a light, structured rhythm for sound play, vocabulary and story comprehension — while remaining fully play-led and flexible.
How this fits within our Preschool curriculum framework
This Early Phonics & Early Reading Pack forms part of our wider Preschool (3–4 Years) Curriculum & Pedagogy Framework, and works alongside:
Universal Continuous Provision Pack
Preschool Skills Progression Ladders (Communication, Early Reading, Writing)
Preschool Theme Packs (6-week medium-term plans)
Mini Theme Micro Packs (responsive interest-led learning)
Practitioner Guidance Posters (language, adult-led, child-led practice)
Together, these documents ensure:
Reading development is language-led, not rushed
Phase 1 phonics is embedded, not isolated
Children arrive in Reception ready for phonics — not exhausted by it
In summary
This pack supports settings to say with confidence:
“We do not teach formal phonics in Preschool — and here is what we do instead.”
It provides clarity, reassurance and practical tools for building strong readers from the inside out — through talk, play, sound, story and meaning.
This document is part of our EYFS Curriculum & Pedagogy Membership (Professional), which provides full access to age-specific curriculum frameworks, planning guidance, assessment tools and leadership support.
