What Is This Theme Pack?
“This Is Me” is the first pack in a six-part Preschool theme series, designed to support children aged 3–4 years as they settle into the setting, build relationships and develop confidence in communication.
It provides a developmentally appropriate starting point for the year, grounding learning in children’s real lives, families, emotions and experiences.
This is not a scheme of work or a rigid weekly plan.
It is a professional curriculum toolkit that gives structure without removing flexibility, supporting high-quality, play-based practice.
What This Pack Focuses On
Across approximately six weeks, children are supported to:
Develop a secure sense of identity and belonging
Build relationships with peers and adults
Learn to name and talk about emotions
Use language to talk about themselves, their families and experiences
Represent ideas through play, art, mark-making and storytelling
Develop independence in self-care and routines
Recognise similarities and differences positively
This theme is intentionally relationship-led, language-rich and inclusive, making it ideal for the start of the Preschool year or for any time children need reconnection and emotional grounding.
How the Pack Is Designed to Be Used
This theme pack is built around best-practice EYFS pedagogy:
Play is the main driver of learning
Continuous provision is the curriculum
Adult-led inputs are short, purposeful and flexible
Observation informs next steps, not checklists
SEND and EAL support is embedded, not added on
Practitioners choose what to use, when to use it, and how long to stay with particular ideas. Children shape the depth, pace and direction of learning.

Why Start the Year with “This Is Me”?
This theme aligns strongly with the EYFS principle that children learn best when they feel safe, known and valued.
It supports:
Settling and emotional regulation
Early oracy and vocabulary development
Positive self-identity
Inclusive representation of families and cultures
Strong foundations for later learning in literacy, maths and relationships
Children are not rushed into academic outcomes — instead, they build the confidence, language and security they need to thrive.
