Communication, signs & display

Choose signs and labels that serve a real purpose in your setting. Keep resources accessible, support different ways to communicate and leave space for children’s own marks and messages.

Use “How Many Can Play?” signs only where an agreed limit supports safe or comfortable access. Keep arrangements flexible and help children negotiate sharing and joining in.

Outdoor provision: common questions

What do we mean by outdoor continuous provision?

Familiar outdoor opportunities that children can return to and develop over time. Space, materials, relationships and thoughtful adult interaction matter more than the number of printables on display.

What is the difference between core provision and an enhancement?

Core provision is the familiar environment and resources available for repeated use. An enhancement introduces a possibility in response to children’s interests or your teaching intentions. It does not require replacing the whole area or changing a theme every week.

Should children complete every card or recording sheet?

No. Select a prompt or recording opportunity when it serves a purpose. Children may adapt an idea, ignore it, return to an earlier action or invent something else. A sheet should support an experience rather than become the reason for it.

Do we need to print everything?

No. Keep adult guidance on screen, use one relevant invitation or take an idea outdoors with resources you already have. Read words aloud when useful and choose a format that suits the children.

How can we support different ways of taking part?

Offer accessible routes, reachable materials, quieter spaces and different ways to explore. Keep children’s usual communication available and accept looking, gestures, sounds, movement and words. Use each pack’s guidance and your setting’s checks to choose suitable materials and supervision.
