Take a look inside

Browse three sample sheets showing pattern, shape, spatial reasoning and measure. Each card combines a small illustration and invitation with an optional “Wonder” question and vocabulary to share during play.

What’s included in the pack?

Thirty cards across six maths areas: number and composition, comparison, pattern, shape, spatial reasoning and measure. There are five cards in each area, giving children varied ways to explore mathematical ideas through play.

Invitations to think and try

The 30 illustrated challenges are arranged two per A4 sheet. Each offers a starting point, an optional question and useful vocabulary. Children can rearrange real objects, try a different approach and share what they notice.

Guidance for practitioners

Two adult pages provide notes, a contents guide and provision links. They include ways to adapt access, extend thinking, support the mathematics and choose suitable materials. The Word file has editable text and replaceable illustrations.

A broader maths offer. Five cards focus on number and composition; the other 25 explore comparison, pattern, shape, spatial reasoning and measure. Use a small selection that connects with the children’s interests and the provision already available.

Using the cards in your provision

Place a card with suitable objects in your maths area, outdoor provision or loose-parts play. The illustrations suggest a starting arrangement or one possible example; welcome the children’s own finds and solutions.

  1. Choose a starting point

Offer one or two cards alongside a small choice of suitable materials. Read the invitation aloud when helpful and give children time to move, arrange and explore the objects.

  2. Notice the thinking

Watch how a child compares, checks or changes an arrangement. Model useful words through talk, gestures or signs. Share a “Wonder” question when it fits the play, and allow time for the child to respond in their own way.

  3. Revisit with a change

Return to an idea with a different material or one changed feature. Invite children to predict what might happen, explain their method or compare approaches. Familiar quantities can still offer interesting new problems.

Make the maths visible

Draw attention to the part of a pattern that repeats. Compare lengths from a common starting point and use equal units without gaps or overlaps. Matching objects one to one can help children compare groups alongside counting.

Different ways to join in

Offer stable trays, reachable surfaces and suitable grips. Include differences in shape and objects as well as colour. Children can move things, point, describe, draw or direct an adult to show their thinking.

Who are the cards designed for?

The pack is primarily for Preschool and Reception. For toddlers, adults can select a simple action, reduce the quantity and use large, suitable objects. The practitioner notes explain these adaptations; the cards are not independent activities for babies.

Do children need to read or record an answer?

No. Adults can share the invitation and introduce the vocabulary naturally. Children can demonstrate their ideas with objects or communicate in their usual ways. “Wonder” questions are optional, and there is no requirement to complete every card.

What should we print?

The pack has 17 pages altogether. Choose cards from pages 3–17 and print on portrait A4 at 100% / actual size. There are two cards per sheet to cut apart. Pages 1–2 contain the practitioner notes and contents guide, so there is no need to print them.

What materials should we offer?

Select materials for the individual children and follow the pack’s preparation notes. Use large alternatives to conkers, acorns and other small parts for under-threes and children who mouth objects. Check natural finds for sharp edges, dirt and mould; do not taste them. Use stable, low structures and light collections for weighing, and wash hands after handling natural materials.
