What’s included in the pack?

Sixteen pages altogether: 24 illustrated challenge cards and four reusable process cards on 14 A4 sheets, plus two “No need to print” practitioner pages.

Open-ended building challenges

Explore spaces, materials, joining and stability through autumn building play. The pictures suggest materials and actions, leaving room for children’s own constructions, solutions and stories.

Support for the adult alongside

Find guidance on setting up provision, making tests meaningful, adapting access and choosing suitable materials. A contents guide helps you find a card and notice possible provision and schema connections.

Plan It → Build It → Test It → Change It

The four reusable process cards can sit beside any challenge or a child’s own project. Planning might be talking, drawing, pointing or arranging materials. Children can move back and forth between the steps, or use just the card that helps now.

Using the challenges in your provision

Offer one or two cards alongside familiar construction resources and a small choice of autumn materials. Share a prompt when it connects with the play, then allow time for children to follow an idea.

  1. Choose materials and a purpose

Let children decide what their construction needs to do. Offer blocks, cardboard, fabric and checked natural materials, with toy animals or model trees where useful. Welcome choosing, pointing and directing a partner as ways to take part.

  2. Notice what happens

Watch how children arrange, balance and join pieces. Use a “Wonder” question when it fits the moment, or comment and pause. Try a gentle test with a toy or light load and talk about what the child notices.

  3. Make room for another try

Keep useful materials available so children can revisit a join, change a part or try another approach. When comparing two versions, keep the toy, load or test action the same. Invite a photograph or drawing if the child wants to remember an idea.

Different ways to join in

Use reachable floor or table space, fewer materials, larger lightweight pieces and easy-to-grip joins where helpful. Children can build together, select a material, explain through gestures or watch before joining in.

Connections across provision

Use the cards in construction or suitable outdoor provision to support practical problem-solving and early STEM exploration. Repeated interests may include connecting, enclosing, positioning and orientation; follow what children do over time.

Who are the cards designed for?

The pack is primarily for Preschool and Reception. The practitioner notes also suggest adaptations for toddlers, using large lightweight pieces, one simple action and close adult support. Choose the materials and scale for the children taking part.

Do children need to read the cards or copy the pictures?

No. An adult can share the prompt and model vocabulary through talk, gestures or signs. The pictures offer starting possibilities, and “Wonder” questions are optional. There is no finished model to copy or written answer to complete.

What should we print?

Print selected challenges from pages 3–14 and the process cards from pages 15–16 on portrait A4 at actual size. Each sheet has two cards to cut apart. Pages 1–2 are practitioner notes and the contents guide, so there is no need to print them. The Word file has editable text and replaceable illustrations.

What materials should we prepare?

Start with familiar blocks, cardboard, cloth and suitable joining materials, adding checked leaves, bark, wood slices or short smooth sticks when useful. Use large alternatives to conkers and small parts for under-threes and children who mouth objects. Keep toy structures low and test with toys, never children or live animals; leave real nests and wildlife undisturbed. Follow the pack’s preparation guidance.
