Take a look inside

What’s included in the pack?
18 pages altogether: 16 recording sheets and two “No need to print” practitioner pages, including a guide to choosing the pages you need.
Space for different ways to record
Choose open drawing space, picture and label pages, optional sentence openings, or a choice of writing lines. Other sheets support sound maps, lists, questions, sequencing, recounts, messages and route maps.
Practical guidance for adults
The notes suggest ways to support talk, early spelling, shared recording and accessibility. Prompts, borders and writing lines can be edited in Word to suit your setting.

Using the pack in EYFS and KS1
Start with a shared experience in a garden, playground, park or woodland. An accessible view or photographs from your walk can also give children something meaningful to talk about and record.
Look, listen and talk
Follow what catches the children’s attention. Allow time to look closely, listen to sounds and share observations before suggesting a way to record them.
Choose a useful page
Make a sound map outdoors, draw a find afterwards, list things to remember or revisit a place to compare changes. Select only the pages that help.
Share with someone
Invite children to explain their map, show a drawing to a friend or send their message to a family member. Give their record a real reader.
For EYFS
Value the meaning children give to their marks, drawings and early writing. Invite them to tell you about their record, model useful words and scribe their ideas when this helps.
For KS1
Use labels, lists, ordered events, a recount or a message for a real purpose. Support oral rehearsal, useful detail and rereading, alongside the spelling and punctuation currently being taught.
Can children join in without writing independently?
Yes. Children can draw, make marks, point, dictate, use photographs or communicate through their usual supports. An adult or partner can help record an idea. Choose suitable tools and accessible spaces, and read prompts aloud where helpful.
Do we need to find particular autumn objects?
No. The pages leave room for what children actually notice in their own surroundings. There is no fixed set of finds to collect, and children can record an experience without bringing natural objects indoors.
What should we print?
Choose from pages 3–18 and print on portrait A4 at actual size. Pages 1–2 are practitioner guidance and a print-selection guide. Keep a sheet whole, or edit the Word file to provide the space and prompts you need.
