Pirates: Tell Me a Story Picture Prompts | EYFS & KS1 Oral Storytelling Resource 🏴☠️
Set sail on an exciting storytelling adventure with our wonderful Pirates: Tell Me a Story Picture Prompts!
This engaging printable resource has been designed to inspire children's imagination, vocabulary development and oral storytelling through a collection of colourful pirate-themed picture scenes. By encouraging children to talk through their ideas before writing, these prompts help develop confidence in speaking, composition and creative writing.
Perfect for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, these versatile prompt sheets provide an enjoyable bridge between spoken language and early writing while capturing children's enthusiasm for pirate adventures.
-
This printable pack contains 5 pirate-themed storytelling prompt sheets:
🗺️ X Marks the Spot!
💰 Treasure Chest
🏝️ On the Island
🏴 Pirate Flag
🐙 A Sea Monster!
Each prompt page includes:
✅ A detailed pirate-themed illustration to inspire storytelling
✅ A simple question prompt:
"Can you tell a story to match this picture?"✅ A carefully chosen vocabulary bank to encourage ambitious language and richer storytelling
The prompt sheets are designed to be printed and laminated for repeated use during storytelling, speaking and writing activities.
-
These picture prompts can be used in many different ways throughout your classroom or setting.
Oral Storytelling
Invite children to study each illustration carefully before creating and sharing their own pirate adventure aloud.
Talk Partner Activities
Children can work together to:
describe what they notice
predict what might happen next
invent characters
create exciting pirate adventures
retell each other's stories
Vocabulary Development
Use the suggested vocabulary banks to introduce adventurous words and encourage children to include them naturally within their stories.
Story Planning
Children can organise their ideas using simple story maps, sequencing cards or drawings before beginning any writing.
Writing Inspiration
Older children can use their oral storytelling as the basis for:
captions
descriptive sentences
diary entries
adventure stories
story openings and endings
-
Confident writers first need opportunities to become confident storytellers.
These picture prompts encourage children to explore ideas, organise events and experiment with language before recording their thoughts on paper.
Through imaginative storytelling, children naturally develop:
vocabulary and spoken language
sequencing skills
narrative structure
descriptive language
confidence in expressing ideas
creativity and imagination
The pirate theme provides an exciting context that motivates children to create adventurous stories while developing important communication and literacy skills.
-
At Little Owls Resources, we believe spoken language provides the strongest foundation for successful writing.
Children benefit from opportunities to:
explore ideas through discussion
rehearse sentences aloud
hear and use ambitious vocabulary
develop stories collaboratively
build confidence before writing independently
These prompt sheets are designed to encourage imagination rather than assess writing ability.
Adults can support learning by:
modelling expressive storytelling
introducing rich vocabulary naturally
asking open-ended questions
encouraging children to extend and refine their ideas
celebrating creativity and original thinking
Every child may tell a different story—and that's exactly what makes these prompts so valuable.
-
Preschool (3–4 Years)
Children may:
describe what they can see
name familiar pirate objects
talk about characters
create short verbal stories
The emphasis should remain on conversation, imagination and vocabulary.
Reception (4–5 Years)
Children may:
sequence simple events
orally compose sentences
describe characters and settings
begin recording simple captions or sentences
Year 1
Children may:
tell complete adventure stories
use the vocabulary prompts independently
organise events in sequence
rehearse sentences before writing
Year 2
Children may:
develop more detailed narratives
create exciting openings and endings
describe settings and characters
extend vocabulary and sentence structure through oral rehearsal
-

Pirate Treasure Hunt Clue Cards designed for you to fill in and place small treasure cards (included) around your setting before game begins. Simply print out the cards that you would like to use (looking carefully at the sentence starter wording at the top of each card) and then write in clues which fit with your setting and children. We designed this activity with following instructions and positional language in mind and so it is intended that you read the cards to the children. Some suggestions for clue writing are included on the first page. We suggest that you hide the second clue with the first small treasure card to be found so that a chain is created. The ultimate aim is to find the treasure chest!
