What this document is

This document is a practical poster-style guidance tool that provides five carefully chosen sentence stems for adults to use during teaching, play and interaction in Reception.

The sentence stems are designed to:

  • support children to explain, reflect and reason

  • strengthen talk for learning across the curriculum

  • develop early metacognition and collaboration

  • align with EYFS expectations, including the Characteristics of Effective Learning

This is not a script or checklist. It is a professional interaction aid to support intentional, responsive adult talk within everyday Reception practice. This document supports professional judgement and does not replace statutory guidance.

Who this is for

  • Reception teachers and practitioners

  • EYFS leaders and mentors

  • Teaching assistants working in Reception provision

  • Staff developing confidence in adult-guided interaction

What this document helps you do

  • Strengthen the quality of adult–child dialogue in play and teaching

  • Encourage children to explain their thinking and choices

  • Support reasoning, reflection and problem-solving across areas of learning

  • Build early metacognitive language in a developmentally appropriate way

  • Prepare children for increased talk-for-learning expectations over time

  • Use consistent, purposeful language without over-questioning

How this fits within our Reception framework

This document forms part of our wider Reception Curriculum & Pedagogy Framework, particularly supporting:

  • Adult-Guided Learning in Provision

  • Characteristics of Effective Learning in Reception

  • Reception Maths Teaching Framework

  • Reception Early Writing Purpose Pack

  • Universal Continuous Provision Pack

Within the framework, these sentence stems:

  • support intentional adult interaction without directing play

  • strengthen learning behaviours such as persistence, reasoning and reflection

  • contribute to confident, inspection-secure articulation of pedagogy

They act as a bridge between play, learning and language, supporting children’s readiness for ELGs while protecting Reception pedagogy.

This document is part of our EYFS Curriculum & Pedagogy Membership (Professional), which provides full access to age-specific curriculum frameworks, planning guidance, assessment tools and leadership support.
