In-the-Moment Narrative Observation Template
Babies (birth-18 months)
A quick, meaningful observation tool for babies aged 0–18 months
(This pathway component will be available for download by: March 28th 2026)
What this document is
This document is a short, practitioner-friendly narrative observation template designed for use with babies aged 0–18 months. It supports in-the-moment observation that captures what a baby is doing, how the adult responds, and how practice can be adapted immediately to support learning and wellbeing.
The template focuses on brief, objective narrative, adult interaction and responsive next steps, rather than tracking progress or evidencing outcomes. Learning links are aligned with the EYFS prime areas, supporting professional reflection without formal assessment.
This tool is designed to support professional judgement and proportionate record-keeping. It is not an assessment checklist and does not replace statutory EYFS guidance.
