Our FREE Pirates: Pirate Ship Role-Play/Display Signs are incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years and KS1 environments:
Creating a Pirate Ship: Use the signs to label different areas of your role-play space. A small pop-up tent could become the 'Captain's Cabin', a large box could be 'The Hold', and a bench could be 'The plank'. This immediately gives children a clear sense of location and purpose.
Promoting Dialogue: The signs are excellent prompts for conversation. Children will naturally use the vocabulary on the signs as they play ("Walk the plank!", "Let's go to the crow's nest!").
Developing Subject Knowledge: The 'Know Your Ship' sign is a powerful educational tool. It provides a visual reference for children to learn key nautical vocabulary in a fun and practical context. An adult can use it to teach children the difference between port and starboard, the bow and the stern.
Literacy Link: The signs offer exposure to a specific vocabulary and environment-specific print. Children are learning to recognise these words and their meanings through play.
Problem-Solving & Collaboration: Children can work together to decide where to place the signs and how to use the different areas of the ship, fostering teamwork and problem-solving skills.
Sensory Play: Use with small world pirate play scenes, labelling different sections.
-
EYFS Framework:
Communication and Language (Listening, Attention & Understanding; Speaking): Children listen to new vocabulary, engage in imaginative conversations, and use new words in context.
Expressive Arts and Design (Role Play): Children use imagination and props to act out experiences and narratives, developing their understanding of the world.
Literacy (Reading - indirectly): Children begin to recognise and understand the meaning of new words in their role-play environment.
Understanding the World (The World): Children learn about a historical or fictional theme (pirates) and the specific vocabulary associated with it.
-
KS1 Curriculum:
English (Spoken Language): Children develop vocabulary, participate in discussions and role-play conversations, and use language imaginatively.
History/Geography: A fun way to introduce historical themes and terminology (e.g., ship parts).
PSHE: Children learn to collaborate, share, and take on different roles.
