Pack of animal cards with sorting labels. Ideal for use as part of an interactive display or sorting activity or game. Differentiate for use with different ages of children by your selection of activity cards, the vocabulary you use and your use of questioning. You may like to select e.g. the headings ‘4 legs’, ‘2 legs’ and ‘0 legs’. Place them on the floor or a table and discuss with your child(ren) which animal cards should be placed under each of the headings. For some headings such as ‘Eats meat’, ‘Eats plants’ and ‘Eats both’ you may like to create your own venn diagram by using two hoops/looped skipping ropes on the floor or circles on paper which overlap in the middle. The 2 separate components go in each hoop e.g. ‘Eats meat’ and ‘Eats plants’ and the overlapping centre is where both characteristics are true. In this case ‘Eats both meat and plants’. If none of the characteristics mentioned are true for an animal, the animal card may be placed outside of the circles. This sorting activity is a great way to encourage children to observe animal characteristics closely. The active engagement with the subject matter means they are more likely to retain knowledge for example new vocabulary. Can you think of any other ways to sort these animals? Perhaps you could make your own heading cards?

‘Our Favourite Animals’ Pictogram Chart pictures and banner designed for children to not only think about their favourite animal, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts. Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place any of the eight large animals on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller animal above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of animals on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like tigers?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like elephants than kangaroos?’ Animals included are: lion, kangaroo, chimpanzee, zebra, elephant, dolphin, tiger and turtle.

Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Farm Animals and their Young’ counting puzzles? Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number beside the adult with the corresponding number of young animals.

Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges. In addition each puzzle matches the adult and young and so this allows for another method of self checking.

Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.

Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the baby animals, counting as they go.

In addition, each number is also written as a word. For our youngest children, this adds to learning about text in the environment and how it has meaning. Our oldest children may start to recognise the words and associate them with the numbers. This will be beneficial for when they begin to read and write these words in subsequent years as they will have something to build on.

Why not use this fun farm animals and their young puzzle game to introduce your children to or consolidate their knowledge of farm animals? Cut each puzzle along the line in the middle and invite your children to match each farm animal with its offspring. Why not extend learning by discussing similarities and differences between the older and younger animals and also between the different types of animals? The aim of this game is to encourage the link between images and specific repeatable sounds (Phase 1 Phonics/Letters & Sounds).

How many spots should Daisy the cow have on her back? Roll the dice to find out! A game to develop number recognition, counting skills, farm animal knowledge, turn taking skills and fine motor control with the placing of the spots. To differentiate for different ages of children you could for example use a 1-3 dice for younger children or extend older children by rolling 2 dice which would require children to do a subtraction equation to find the difference between the two numbers. This would then give them a resulting number of spots to place on the cow. Have fun!

Farm Animals Pictogram Chart pictures designed for children to not only think about their favourite farm animal, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts. Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place the four large animals on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller animal above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of animals on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like chickens?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like cows than pigs?’ could be delved into.

Great for number formation and counting! These A4 size mats can be laminated for use as playdough mats. Children can mould the shape of each number in playdough and also make the sea animals. Additionally, they may be used for number writing practice with a whiteboard pen or used as stimulus for a loose parts activity. Can you match the feeding time number on the animal card to the time on the clock?

All times are o’clock and each puzzle pair has a different way of connecting for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt to read the time yet, but are familiar with a clock face and numbers to 12, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.

Once the puzzles are complete, why not line them up in time order? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a time and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.

Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Feed the Lion’ counting puzzles? Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number underneath the lion with the corresponding meat to feed them.

Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to be zoo animals with this set of 8 Zoo Activity Challenge cards!

Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do? Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance!

Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

Cut each puzzle along the line in the middle and invite your children to match each zoo animal with its footprint. ‘Sleeping Bunnies’ Nursery Rhyme Large Sequence Cards. Useful for an interactive display focusing on ordering events, or an activity with an individual child or large group. The cards could be used as a sequencing activity or teaching prompts to learn the nursery rhyme and focus on its content through visual aids. Younger children will love to explore the rhythm and rhyme of this nursery rhyme and join in, especially with the aid of visual stimulus. Perhaps with older children you might like to highlight the CVC words to practise blending or identify all of the Phase 2 or 3 sounds or high frequency words? ‘Sleeping Bunnies’ Nursery Rhyme Individual Handout. Why not send these home for children to enjoy sharing with their families? Small enough to fit in children’s bags and won’t waste too much printer ink, but will still encourage communication and language development at home. Children may also enjoy sharing what they have learnt at school/your setting regarding the rhyme, whether it be actions, new key words or letters and sounds or simply being able to recite the whole rhyme rhythmically. When used as part of a display or offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the cards in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Younger children may point to familiar objects when prompted e.g. ‘Where’s the frost?’ and learn new words as you describe to them what is in the picture. Have great fun with your children whilst all acting out Autumn sights with this set of 8 Autumn Activity Challenge cards. Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance! Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

‘Signs of Autumn’ cards. Ideal for use as part of a Autumn display to visually highlight the changes that happen following Summer. Cards can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language.

When used as part of a display or offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the cards in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Younger children may point to familiar objects when prompted e.g. ‘Where’s the squirrel?’ and learn new words as you describe to them what is in the picture. As children progress, more ground may be covered such as ‘What colours can you see?’, ‘How many leaves are there in this picture?’, ‘Which is your favourite card?’, ‘Why do you like this picture the best?’, ‘What do you think trees will look like in the Winter?’, ‘Have you seen any of these signs of Autumn?’, ‘Where?’, ‘When?’, ‘Who were you with?’, ‘Shall we go outside and see which of them we can find?’ You may like to use our ‘Autumn Checklists’ as an activity prompt for searching outside.
