A simple hedgehog outline template, ready to be printed and decorated.
A fun, collage activity: The resource prompts children to use leaves and other natural materials to create the hedgehog's 'spikes'.
A great starting point for a creative adventure: The template is a perfect follow-up to an autumn walk where children can collect the items they need for their masterpiece.

Our Hedgehog Autumn Leaves Collage Activity is incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years and KS1 environments:
Go on a Nature Hunt:
Before the activity, take children on a walk to collect a variety of autumn leaves. Talk about the different colours, shapes, and sizes they find.
Creative Art Session:
Once you're back, provide glue and the hedgehog templates.
Encourage children to carefully stick the leaves onto the hedgehog's back to create its spines. This is a great way to develop their fine motor skills and artistic flair.
Display Your Work:
The finished hedgehogs make a wonderful addition to an autumn display board, showcasing the children's creativity and effort. You could even mount them on a larger background to create a class-wide autumn scene.
Communication and Language:
As children are creating their hedgehogs, talk to them about what they are doing. Ask them questions like, "What colours are you using for your hedgehog?" or "Why do you think hedgehogs have prickly spines?".
-
EYFS Framework:
Expressive Arts and Design: Children explore and use a range of natural materials to express their creativity and ideas.
Physical Development (Fine Motor Control): The acts of picking up and sticking leaves help to strengthen hand muscles and improve dexterity.
Understanding the World (The Natural World): Children learn to make observations of the natural world and use natural materials in their art.
-
KS1 Curriculum:
Art and Design: Children use a range of materials to design and make.
Science (Animals, including Humans): The activity provides a great opportunity to talk about hedgehogs and how they prepare for winter.
English (Spoken Language): Children can talk about their art and their observations of the natural world.
