  This resource is incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of ways across early years environments:

  • Independent Practice: Place the cards in a quiet learning area. Children can take a card, quickly say the number of conkers, and then turn it over to see if they were correct. This promotes independent learning and reinforces the skill of subitising, which is the ability to instantly recognise a small number of objects without counting them.

  • Group Game: An adult can hold up a card (conker side facing out) and ask the group to shout out the number they see. You can also use the cards as a fun matching game.

  • Visual Aid: The cards with the number numerals on them, composed of natural items, can also be used as a display aid to reinforce number recognition in a creative way.

  • Vocabulary Development: The activity provides a great opportunity to talk about the different autumnal items and their characteristics.
