Our FREE Autumn: Hedgehog Numbers are incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years and KS1 environments:
Number Line & Display:
Print and laminate the hedgehogs to create a colourful number line for your classroom display. This provides a constant visual reference for children.
Hands-on Counting with Loose Parts:
Place the hedgehogs in a tuff spot or on a table alongside a selection of autumn-themed loose parts, such as conkers, leaves, or acorns. Children can count out the correct number of loose parts to give to each hedgehog, practising their one-to-one correspondence.
Number Ordering Game:
Muddle up the hedgehogs and challenge children to place them in the correct numerical order. This helps to develop their understanding of number sequence.
'Which Hedgehog is Missing?' Game:
Once the children are confident with the number sequence, have them close their eyes while you take one hedgehog away. Can they work out which one is missing? This is a great game for developing memory and number sense.
Subitising Practice:
Use the cards with dots to help children practise subitising—the ability to instantly recognise the number of items in a small group without counting them.
-
EYFS Framework:
Mathematics (Number): Children learn to count, recognise numerals, and understand one-to-one correspondence.
Mathematics (Shape, Space and Measure): The ordering games help children to understand number sequence.
Communication and Language: Children can talk about the numbers and the objects they are counting.
-
KS1 Curriculum:
Mathematics (Number and Place Value): Children can use the hedgehogs to practise counting to 20 and beyond, and to order numbers.
Mathematics (Addition and Subtraction): The hedgehogs can be used to support simple addition and subtraction problems.
