• Hedgehog cards for subitising: A set of cute cartoon hedgehog cards, each showing various configurations of red dots on their backs. There are four cards for each number (1, 2, and 3).

• Blank hedgehog cards for children to create their own designs.

• A simple and engaging game concept: Children are challenged to spot the hedgehogs with the correct number of dots and match them to the appropriate posters.

  Our FREE Autumn: Hedgehog Counting & Subitising Activity is incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years environments:

  • Main Game: Find & Match!

    • Lay out the three A4 posters as 'piles of cosy leaves'.

    • Scatter the hedgehog cards in the middle of the play area.

    • Challenge children with the question, "How quickly can we match all of the hedgehogs to the correct piles of cosy leaves?"

    • Once children are confident, you can add an element of challenge with a timer.

  • Numeracy & Subitising Practice:

    • The hedgehog cards with their different dot configurations are perfect for practising subitising—the ability to instantly recognise a small number of objects without counting them.

    • Encourage children to look at the cards and say the number of dots without counting them.

  • Early Number Formation:

    • Laminate the large numeral posters (1-3) and use them as a teaching aid.

    • Children can use playdough to create the number outlines or trace them with a whiteboard pen, supporting early number formation.

  • Creative Extension:
