What is Included in this EYFS Planning Aid?
This download is specifically structured to support differentiation and progression across all age ranges in your setting, ensuring your continuous provision remains stimulating and purposeful:
Four Differentiated Ideas Banks: We have carefully curated enhancement ideas for four key developmental stages:
0–18 Month Provision Ideas (Babies)
18–36 Month Provision Ideas (Toddlers)
3–4 Year Provision Ideas (Preschool)
4–5 Year Provision Ideas (Reception)
High-Value Thematic Ideas: Focus on enriching core areas like Small World, Construction, Sensory, and Outdoor Learning with engaging ideas based on nocturnal animals such as owls, bats, hedgehogs, and foxes.
Why Choose This Resource for Your Setting?
We believe in empowering EYFS educators to be responsive and reflective. This guide is designed to transform your environment into an irresistible invitation to learn about the animals that wake up when we go to sleep:
Enhance Child-Led Learning: Use the ideas to naturally extend children's current interests to build a responsive practice.
Deepen Understanding and Vocabulary: Introduce rich vocabulary and concepts (like shadow, light, and hibernation) through play.
Support Team Reflection: This pack provides a solid framework for monitoring the impact of your continuous provision enhancements and discussing the role of the adult in supporting deep-level learning.
[Note: The current thinking and best practice in EYFS strongly advocate for a balanced approach that effectively blends planned, adult-led teaching (often with a "playful" element) with 'in the moment' responsive planning in child-initiated play.]
Bring this captivating topic to life in your setting! Download the Nocturnal Animals planning guide today and ensure your EYFS continuous provision is rich, purposeful, and fully supports the development of every child. 🛠️

This form of planning is the most flexible and responsive. It's often referred to as "in the moment", "on-the-spot" or "responsive" planning. Intended for use by all types of EYFS practitioners, this flexible pack is ideal for Nurseries, Childminders, Preschools or for Reception Teachers at school. This short-term planning toolkit has all of the materials you need to guide you through this responsive approach to your children’s learning.
Place as an ‘invitation to play’ as part of continuous provision and/or use as prompts during an adult led activity as follows:
Print and laminate the cards being mindful not to leave pointy corners.
Set up the two sets of animal cards. Choose one of the animals and say its name out loud, e.g. “Owl!”
Then say to the child “Can you find the other owl?”
Help the child through a matching game, whilst reinforcing the names of the animals.
Ideal for 1-2 year olds, but use of cards can be adapted for different age groups.

Set of high Contrast black and white silhouette cards for ‘Nocturnal Animals’ theme. Perfect addition to your continuous provision surrounding this topic.
We have included a variety of cards in this pack for various purposes. The large high contrast images are well suited for visual tracking with babies and for decoration and displays. Our smaller cards are ideal for use with slightly older children in problem solving matching and sorting activities, either left out as an ‘invitation to play’ or as a more adult directed activity.

Set of cards and mats for sorting of nocturnal and diurnal animals. A great addition to your continuous provision for a ‘Nocturnal Animals’ theme. The printables can either be left out as an ‘invitation to play’ or set up as a more adult directed activity. Children may use the materials in a very different way to expected, e.g. for small world role-play using the mats as back drops or as prompts for making animal sounds.
Possible adult directed activity:
- Print and laminate the cards being mindful not to leave pointy corners.
- Children to think about when different animals are awake and sort them according to Day and Night.
- Practitioners can choose between colour coded animals for extra scaffolding or uniformly coloured animals for additional challenge.

Nocturnal animals tally sheet designed for aiding the development of early data representation skills.
Possible adult directed activity:
- Print several sets of the page of animal cards, fold them along the middle and then laminate them, being mindful not to leave pointy corners. (Or use your own nocturnal animal props.) Use the quantity of each animal you think is appropriate for your child(ren).
- Spread the cards out face down. Children to take turns turning over a card and then marking it on their tally chart. When all cards are turned, children to count totals and see which one they turned over the most.
- Variations include placing animals (cards or small world toys) around your setting or in a tuff tray for children to find and then make marks on the tally chart.
