Our FREE St. David's Day: Welsh Dragon Activity Mats are incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years and KS1 environments:
Colouring & Mindfulness: As a colouring sheet, the dragon can be filled with red, green, and other colours. This activity naturally promotes mindfulness and focus, as children concentrate on filling each section, making it an excellent quiet-time task.
Sensory & Fine Motor Centre: Place a laminated mat in a continuous provision area with playdough, red and green loose parts, or other small manipulatives. Children can use their fingers or tools like tweezers to arrange the loose parts, strengthening crucial fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Art and Craft Activity: Turn it into a collage project! Children can cut and stick red and green paper, tissue paper, fabric scraps, or other craft materials to create vibrant dragon designs.
Mark-Making Practice: Provide the mat with different pens, pencils, or crayons. Children can fill the dragon outline with patterns, lines, and shapes, practicing their pre-writing and mark-making skills.
Topic Introduction: Use the mats to introduce the theme of St. David's Day, discussing the Welsh dragon as a powerful symbol of Wales. This can lead to discussions about flags, history, and national identity.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development (Self-Regulation): Engaging in a focused, calming activity like colouring or detailed design work promotes self-regulation, concentration, and patience.
Understanding the World (People, Culture & Communities): Introduces children to a specific cultural symbol and celebration.
