Understanding International Tiger Day in EYFS & KS1
International Tiger Day, celebrated annually on July 29th, is a powerful reminder of the majesty and importance of one of the world's most iconic big cats. It's a global awareness day dedicated to highlighting the plight of wild tigers and galvanising efforts for their conservation.
For early years settings, nurseries, preschools, childminders, and Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms, this day provides a thrilling and impactful theme for exploring wild animals, conservation, and biodiversity. It's about inspiring awe and wonder for these incredible creatures, fostering empathy for endangered species, and understanding the role we all play in protecting our planet's wildlife. This day offers countless planning ideas and inspiration for engaging activity invitations that truly resonate with young minds, making learning about global conservation both captivating and accessible.
Why Is Teaching About Tigers & Conservation Vaulable for Young Children?
Integrating lessons about tigers, other wild animals, and conservation into your practice with young children (aged 0-7) is incredibly important for fostering scientific curiosity, ecological understanding, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. During their early years, children are often fascinated by animals and their diverse habitats.
Biodiversity and Habitats: Learning about tigers introduces children to different animal species and the specific habitats they live in (like forests and grasslands), highlighting the vast array of life on Earth.
Conservation Awareness: It presents a tangible example of an endangered species, helping children grasp the concept that some animals need our protection and why. This fosters an early sense of environmental responsibility.
Empathy and Respect: Understanding the challenges tigers face in the wild cultivates empathy for animals and encourages respectful attitudes towards all living creatures.
Global Connections: Tigers live in various countries, which can open up discussions about different parts of the world, cultures, and shared global responsibilities.
Scientific Inquiry: Exploring tiger characteristics (stripes, roars, diet) can spark curiosity about animal biology, adaptations, and behaviour. Our 'Tiger Pack' is a great starting point for this.
Literacy and Numeracy: Animal themes naturally lend themselves to learning new vocabulary, counting, and data representation, as seen in many of our animal and zoo animal resources.
Engaging Tiger & Animal Activities for International Tiger Day (0-7 Year Olds)
Making International Tiger Day a roaring success is easy with these planning ideas and activities perfect for EYFS and KS1 children. The focus is on discovery, creativity, and celebrating the majestic tiger and other wild animals! Many of these early years and year 1 activities can be supported by the extensive range of printable resources we have available.
Here's some inspiration for bringing the power of the tiger and the importance of conservation into your setting. The following ideas may be adapted for various EYFS and KS1 settings. In EYFS, these ideas are best viewed as invitations to explore, investigate and engage in meaningful play rather than activities every child is expected to complete. Practitioners may choose to follow children's interests. In KS1, some ideas may also be used within more structured learning opportunities where appropriate.
Printable resources to support the following ideas may be found further down this page.
(Please use your own discretion and knowledge of your children to ensure appropriateness of each activity and safety concerning any materials given and activity undertaken.)
Tiger Art & Craft: Focus on the tiger's distinctive stripes! Provide yellow/orange and black paints or paper for children to create their own tiger art. Our 'Tiger - Colouring (Mindfulness)' and 'Tiger - Stripes Activity' can be utilised alongside this, encouraging focus and creativity.
Tiger & Animal Movement: Encourage children to move like different wild animals. Our 'Zoo Animal Activity Challenge Cards' are great for physical activity and imaginative play.
Counting Tiger Food: Discuss what tigers eat and use our 'Tiger - Food Counting Puzzles' to combine numeracy with the theme of a tiger's diet.
Explore Animal Sounds: Introduce children to the sounds of different wild animals, especially the tiger's roar! Our 'Wild Animal Sounds Mat - Phase 1 Phonics' and 'Animal Sound Mat - Phase 2' (along with 'Animal Sound Cards - Phase 2' and 'Animal Sound Cards - Phase 2 (Colouring)') can be used for fun phonics and auditory discrimination activities.
Zoo Role-Play: Set up a Zoo Dramatic Role Play Pack area! Provide animal masks or puppets (like our 'Zoo Animal Lollipop Puppets' and 'Zoo Animal Lollipop Puppets - Colouring'), and encourage children to pretend to be zookeepers or visitors. Our 'Zoo Animal 2-Piece Puzzles' can be used in this area.
Animal Sorting & Classification: Provide pictures of various animals and ask children to sort them into categories (e.g., wild animals, farm animals, pets). Furthermore, use our 'Animal Sorting Game/Activity' to think about different animal’s diets.
Measure Up with Animals: Use our 'Animal Height Chart Display' to compare children's heights to different animals, or our 'Animal Height Colouring & Drawing' activity for a creative approach to measurement.
Favourite Animal Pictogram: Have children choose their favourite animal and create a simple pictogram using our 'Our Favourite Animals' Pictogram'. This is a great way to introduce data representation.
Animal Word & Alphabet Games: Expand vocabulary using our 'Zoo Animal Word Cards' or 'Animal Picture Snap Cards'. Explore the alphabet with our 'Animal Alphabet Horizontal Flashcards/Posters - Upper & Lower Case' or 'Animal Alphabet/Initial Sound Puzzles'. Our 'Animal Alphabet Multimats - Playdough, Whiteboard & Pen or Loose Parts' offer versatile learning.
Zoo Trip Planning: If a real zoo trip isn't possible, plan a pretend one! Use our 'My Day At The Zoo - Booklet' and 'Zoo (Animal) Checklist' to guide the experience. You can also explore 'Match The Feeding Times - Puzzle' and 'Feeding The Animals - Draw Their Food' to discuss animal care.
Animal Fact Learning: Share simple facts about different zoo animals using our 'Zoo Animal Fact Cards'.
Creative Animal Art: Use our 'Animal Border Sheets (Horizontal)' and 'Animal Border Sheets (Vertical)' for drawing or writing about animals. Our 'Zoo Animal Colouring (with Name & Footprint)' pages offer an engaging activity.
Numeracy with Zoo Animals: Our 'Zoo Animal Counting Display Posters/Flashcards' and 'Zoo Animal Number Slice Puzzles (1-5, 1-10, 0-20) - Full Colour and Colouring Versions' provide diverse ways to practice counting and number recognition.
These activities offer great inspiration for making International Tiger Day a memorable and impactful experience in your early years and Key Stage One setting, fostering a sense of wonder for wild animals and the urgent need for their conservation.

Pack of animal cards with sorting labels. Ideal for use as part of an interactive display or sorting activity or game. Differentiate for use with different ages of children by your selection of activity cards, the vocabulary you use and your use of questioning. You may like to select e.g. the headings ‘4 legs’, ‘2 legs’ and ‘0 legs’. Place them on the floor or a table and discuss with your child(ren) which animal cards should be placed under each of the headings. For some headings such as ‘Eats meat’, ‘Eats plants’ and ‘Eats both’ you may like to create your own venn diagram by using two hoops/looped skipping ropes on the floor or circles on paper which overlap in the middle. The 2 separate components go in each hoop e.g. ‘Eats meat’ and ‘Eats plants’ and the overlapping centre is where both characteristics are true. In this case ‘Eats both meat and plants’. If none of the characteristics mentioned are true for an animal, the animal card may be placed outside of the circles. This sorting activity is a great way to encourage children to observe animal characteristics closely. The active engagement with the subject matter means they are more likely to retain knowledge for example new vocabulary. Can you think of any other ways to sort these animals? Perhaps you could make your own heading cards?

‘Our Favourite Animals’ Pictogram Chart pictures and banner designed for children to not only think about their favourite animal, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts. Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place any of the eight large animals on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller animal above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of animals on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like tigers?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like elephants than kangaroos?’ Animals included are: lion, kangaroo, chimpanzee, zebra, elephant, dolphin, tiger and turtle.

These A4 size mats can be laminated for use as playdough mats, or for letter writing practice with a whiteboard pen. Alternatively, they can be part of a loose parts activity.
The first stage is for children to hear the sound that each letter makes in the corresponding animal names. In this set the sounds are all at the beginnings of each word, i.e. the initial sounds (apart from fox which is the final sound to ensure the x makes the relevant sound). At this stage the children will enjoy moulding playdough onto the shapes of the letters and using loose parts lined up to make the letter shapes. This helps to familiarise children with the letters, recognise them and assign sounds to them.
During the final stage, children may express an interest in using mark making tools (a whiteboard pen if you have already laminated the sheet for playdough use) to start to practise fine motor skills and form the letters.

Can you match the feeding time number on the animal card to the time on the clock?
All times are o’clock and each puzzle pair has a different way of connecting for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt to read the time yet, but are familiar with a clock face and numbers to 12, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.
Once the puzzles are complete, why not line them up in time order? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a time and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.
Puzzles could also be used as posters or flashcards if left uncut.

Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to be zoo animals with this set of 8 Zoo Activity Challenge cards!
Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do? Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance!
Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.
Why not read ‘Dear Zoo’ alongside this activity?!

Several activity sheets designed for use during or after a zoo trip. Sheets include: - ‘Zoo Checklist’ which features pictures of some typical zoo animals with space underneath each for children to tick the ones they have observed - ‘Zoo Tally’ sheet to enable children to begin to make marks which correspond to quantities of things (children may be encouraged to make any mark in the appropriate box when they see the animal/object, this will develop to tally lines and older children may even count up the tally and write the corresponding number) - ‘What can you see on your zoo trip?’ differentiated writing/drawing/mark making sheets with lots of versions to choose from.

This pack includes 14 different zoo animals. Can be used as part of a display or activity. Why not hide them in a sand tray and see which animals the children can uncover? You could also play sorting games such as organising the cards into piles with different characteristics, e.g. tails, fins, number of legs, etc.

Facts include: name, picture, footprint, what they eat, what their young are called and how long they live for. Why not use them as part of a display or role play area? Cards could be used to demonstrate information boards you may find at an animal enclosure when walking around a zoo. Or perhaps children could create their own miniature home for a particular animal using art and craft materials with a cardboard box. File includes 14 cards. Have fun!

Consolidate children’s knowledge of zoo animals whilst playing a fun game of snap (or a memory game of ‘picking up pairs’) with this set of large snap cards. The cards are made with a tab which can be folded before lamination in order to strengthen the final product. This also means that when turned over, the picture on the front can not be seen. The cards include a picture of each animal, their footprint silhouette and also their name written in lower case letters. 11 animals included and the file comprises 44 cards in total.
