Understanding International Day of Friendship / World Friendship Day in EYFS & KS1
International Day of Friendship (also known as World Friendship Day), observed annually on July 30th, is a heartwarming occasion dedicated to celebrating the power of friendship and its importance in fostering peace and understanding across cultures. For young children, it's a perfect opportunity to explore what it means to be a good friend, how we connect with others, and the joy that strong bonds can bring.
For early years settings, nurseries, preschools, childminders, and Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms, this day provides a wonderfully positive theme to focus on personal, social and emotional development (PSED). It's about encouraging empathy, teaching social skills, and celebrating the unique relationships children form with their peers. This day offers great planning ideas and inspiration for engaging activities that truly resonate with young minds, making learning about kindness and friendship both meaningful and fun.
Why Is Teaching About Friendship & Kindness Important for Young Children?
Integrating lessons about friendship and kindness into your practice with young children (aged 0-7) fosters their social-emotional development, building positive relationships, and creating a harmonious learning environment. During their early years, children are actively learning how to interact with the world and those around them.
Social Skills Development: Learning how to share, take turns, listen, and resolve conflicts are fundamental social skills that are essential for successful interactions and future relationships.
Empathy and Understanding: Exploring the concept of friendship helps children put themselves in others' shoes, understand different feelings, and respond with compassion.
Emotional Well-being: Having friends and experiencing acts of kindness contributes significantly to a child's sense of belonging, self-worth, and overall happiness.
Communication: Friendship encourages children to communicate their needs, feelings, and ideas effectively, both verbally and non-verbally.
Building Community: Celebrating friendship within your setting fosters a strong sense of community and mutual respect among children and adults alike.
Positive Behaviour: Focusing on what makes a good friend naturally promotes positive behaviours like sharing, helping, and including others.
