Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Butterfly Counting Puzzles’?

Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number with the corresponding number of butterflies. Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.

Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.

Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the butterflies, counting as they go.

Minibeasts Pictogram Chart pictures designed for children to not only think about their favourite minibeast, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts.

Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place the four large minibeasts on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller minibeast above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of minibeasts on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like the bee?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like the bee than the butterfly?’ could be delved into.

These cards can be used as they are with pencil/crayons & loose parts or laminated for use with playdough or whiteboard pens. Easy to use, these doubling mats provide a clear representation of the concept of doubling. Simply choose a number appropriate for your child’s level in the top box (e.g. 3), then in this example place 3 loose part objects/playdough spots, pencil/pen marks on one wing and the same on the other. Encourage your child to count the spots using 1:1 correspondence counting and then write the answer 6 in the final box. This shows that double 3 is equal to 6.

Endless discussions can be engaged in describing these creatures. For example physical attributes such as whether they have wings, armoured bodies, shells, number of legs or body sections, etc. Older children can be challenged to further contemplate ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions building on these observations. Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to be minibeasts with this set of 8 Minibeast Activity Challenge cards.

Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance!

Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges. Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further game, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence. Engage your children in counting play by enlisting their help to create their own ‘Minibeasts’ puzzle set. Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to colour the images and numbers. The aim of this game is to encourage the link between images and specific repeatable sounds (Phase 1 Phonics/Letters & Sounds).

• Choose a game piece (either the tractors supplied or use counters/small world characters of your own)

• Roll the dice (choose dice with numbers appropriate for your children)

• Move your game piece along the board

• Make the right noise for the square you land on

Great for number formation and counting! These A4 size mats can be laminated for use as playdough mats. Children can mould the shape of each number in playdough and also make the minibeasts. Additionally, they may be used for number writing practice with a whiteboard pen or used as stimulus for a loose parts activity. Cards can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language. When used as part of a display or offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the cards in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Two different boards to choose from - one for Phase 2 Sounds and another for Phase 3 Sounds. Dice required. Children choose a robin to place at the start, roll the dice and move the appropriate number of sound squares towards the birdfeeder. Can you match the feeding time number on the animal card to the time on the clock?

All times are o’clock and each puzzle pair has a different way of connecting for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt to read the time yet, but are familiar with a clock face and numbers to 12, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.

Once the puzzles are complete, why not line them up in time order? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a time and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.

Puzzles could also be used as posters or flashcards if left uncut.

Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Feed the Lion’ counting puzzles? Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number underneath the lion with the corresponding meat to feed them.

Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.

Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to be zoo animals with this set of 8 Zoo Activity Challenge cards!

Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do? Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance!

Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

Cards could be used to demonstrate information boards you may find at an animal enclosure when walking around a zoo.
