For Key Stage One, an ideal start to this work would be a circle time discussion, alongside some partner talk, in which the children talk about their summer holiday experiences. It is beneficial to encourage discussion of the senses involved in their experiences, sights, smells, etc.
Pages 2-3 of this document are planning sheets with three spaces for a drawing and a sentence. The children can fill this in in a preliminary lesson before using the subsequent writing sheets for their recount.
There are four different starter sheets with different spaced lines as well as a follow-on sheet for those that are able to or wish to write more.
Early Years children (at various levels) would benefit from 1:1 conversation about what they did during their summer holidays. Depending on confidence levels, the sheets will allow children to express their thoughts from early mark making attempts (with perhaps an adult scribing what the child has said) to pictures with the beginnings of a few letters, words or even a simple sentence.

These Summer Senses Poem mark making prompt sheets will help encourage your children to draw and/or write about their senses and start to get a feel for poetry…perhaps after the children have been on a Summer walk!
Children can complete them at varying levels. For example, your youngest children may be able to tell you what they see or hear and you can scribe a single word in each box. Some children may like to make marks to represent what they sense and your more developed children may like to write the rest of the sentence thinking about describing words to build a picture in the reader’s mind. Please note, the words do not need to rhyme.

How many Summer themed objects are there altogether? Children learn to find the total number of objects in two groups by counting all of the objects. Simple addition sheets ideal for strengthening 1:1 correspondence counting and number writing skills whilst introducing basic addition principles using words/phrases such as ‘plus’, ‘add’, ‘equal to’, ‘altogether’, etc. For example you may ask ‘How many sandcastles are there altogether?’ or confirm ‘2 plus 2 is equal to 4’. This colour matching set may be used in many different ways. Here are a few examples…
You may like to cut out and laminate the mats and separate cards to create an invitation to play for your child(ren). Children will naturally want to match the objects and colours, for example placing the blue cup card onto the corresponding blue cup on the teddy bear mat.
Play games with the children, perhaps putting things in the wrong place yourself, saying ‘Oh silly me! That’s not a green cup, it’s a red cup!’ all the while reinforcing the names of the colours.
As a cut and stick activity for individual use.
Give a specific colour mat to your child and encourage them to find the colour cards to match with the mat.

Great activity to inspire sequencing and listening skills.
Why not start by describing the pictures? Encourage your children to describe what they can see. Do they recognise the characters and objects from the story?
Can your child(ren) help you to place the pictures in the order they happen in the story?
Once your pictures are in the right order, perhaps you could read one of the story segments. Can your child(ren) indicate which picture they think it matches with? Continue to do this until you have the outline of the story.
The amount of adult involvement in this process can be determined by the age and level of your child(ren).

Great for number formation and counting! These A4 size mats can be laminated for use as playdough mats. Children can mould the shape of each number in playdough and also make the sea animals. Sock counting puzzles (1-10). Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Sock Counting Puzzles’?
Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number with the corresponding number of socks. Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.
Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.
Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the socks, counting as they go.

As with the display full colour versions, these colouring cards are ideal to visually highlight the changes that happen following Autumn. In conjunction with developing fine motor skills and expressive arts and design elements (e.g. the choice of colours), cards can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language. When offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the cards in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Younger children may point to familiar objects when prompted e.g. ‘Where’s the tree?’ and learn new words as you describe to them what is in the picture. As children progress, more ground may be covered such as ‘What colours have you used?’, ‘How many snow drop flowers are there in this picture?’, ‘Which is your favourite card?’, ‘Why do you like this picture the best?’, ‘Have you seen any of these signs of Winter?’, ‘Where?’, ‘When?’, ‘Who were you with?’, ‘Shall we go outside and see which of them we can find?’ If children take their pictures home, further consolidation of new vocabulary and Winter facts may arise through additional communication with those at home.

How much input is required from an adult will depend on the child. Can you match the feeding time number on the animal card to the time on the clock?
All times are o’clock and each puzzle pair has a different way of connecting for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt to read the time yet, but are familiar with a clock face and numbers to 12, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.
Once the puzzles are complete, why not line them up in time order? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a time and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.
Puzzles could also be used as posters or flashcards if left uncut.

Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Feed the Lion’ counting puzzles? Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number underneath the lion with the corresponding meat to feed them.
Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.

Why not use this fun zoo animals and their footprints puzzle game to introduce your children to or consolidate their knowledge of zoo animals? Cut each puzzle along the line in the middle and invite your children to match each zoo animal with its footprint. Why not extend learning by discussing similarities and differences between the different footprints?
