Our Valentine's Day: Heart Number Cards (Small) are incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years and KS1 environments:
Number Recognition & Identification: Use as flashcards for quick recognition drills. Hold up a card and ask children to identify the number.
Number Formation Practice: Laminate the cards and provide whiteboard pens or encourage finger tracing within the numeral outline. This helps children practise the correct stroke order for each number.
Counting Activities:
Lay out a selection of cards and ask children to count out the corresponding number of small objects (e.g., pom-poms, buttons, mini erasers) next to each heart.
Children can also use them to count items around the room, placing the correct number card next to groups of objects.
Sequencing & Ordering: Challenge children to put a set of cards (e.g., 1-5, 1-10, or 1-20) in the correct numerical order. This can be done on a table, a number line, or even pegged onto a string.
Missing Number Game: Once a sequence is ordered, subtly remove one or two cards and ask children to identify which numbers are missing.
Matching Activities: Pair these cards with sets of objects for one-to-one correspondence activities, or with other number representations (e.g., dot patterns, tally marks).
Fine Motor Development: The act of holding, manipulating, and writing/tracing on these small cards helps to strengthen small hand muscles and improve dexterity.
Display Elements: The charming heart design makes them perfect for a small Valentine's Day themed number display or a mini number line.

EYFS Framework:
Mathematics (Number): Children learn to recognise and identify numerals (1-20), count objects reliably, and put numbers in order.
Physical Development (Fine Motor Skills): Holding and manipulating cards, finger tracing, and writing inside numerals helps to strengthen hand muscles and enhance hand-eye coordination.
Communication and Language: Opportunities for children to use mathematical vocabulary (e.g., 'more', 'less', 'next', number names) and discuss numbers.
Literacy (Writing - indirectly): Practising number formation supports overall mark-making and early writing skills.
-
KS1 Curriculum:
Mathematics (Number and Place Value): Children read and write numbers to 20 (and beyond, using these as a foundation). They identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations. They can order and compare numbers.
English (Handwriting - indirectly): The fine motor control developed through number formation directly supports letter formation and handwriting.
