For Key Stage One, an ideal start to this work would be a circle time discussion, alongside some partner talk, in which the children talk about their summer holiday experiences. It is beneficial to encourage discussion of the senses involved in their experiences, sights, smells, etc.
Pages 2-3 of this document are planning sheets with three spaces for a drawing and a sentence. The children can fill this in in a preliminary lesson before using the subsequent writing sheets for their recount.
There are four different starter sheets with different spaced lines as well as a follow-on sheet for those that are able to or wish to write more.
Early Years children (at various levels) would benefit from 1:1 conversation about what they did during their summer holidays. Depending on confidence levels, the sheets will allow children to express their thoughts from early mark making attempts (with perhaps an adult scribing what the child has said) to pictures with the beginnings of a few letters, words or even a simple sentence.

These Summer Senses Poem mark making prompt sheets will help encourage your children to draw and/or write about their senses and start to get a feel for poetry…perhaps after the children have been on a Summer walk!
Children can complete them at varying levels. For example, your youngest children may be able to tell you what they see or hear and you can scribe a single word in each box. Some children may like to make marks to represent what they sense and your more developed children may like to write the rest of the sentence thinking about describing words to build a picture in the reader’s mind. ‘Signs of Summer’ cards. Ideal for use as part of a Summer display to visually highlight the changes that happen following Spring. Cards can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language. When used as part of a display or offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the cards in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Younger children may point to familiar objects when prompted e.g. ‘Where’s the tree?’ and learn new words as you describe to them what is in the picture. Have fun with this set of 8 Summer Activity Challenge cards. Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance! Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

‘Our Favourite/Favorite Sandwiches’ Pictogram Chart is designed for children to not only think about their favourite sandwich, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts.
Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times.
Simply place the large sandwich images in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller sandwich above to create the vertical lines of a chart.
The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of sandwiches on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like ham and cheese?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like salad than the jam?’ could be delved into.

Great activity to inspire sequencing and listening skills.
Why not start by describing the pictures? Encourage your children to describe what they can see. Do they recognise the characters and objects from the story?
Can your child(ren) help you to place the pictures in the order they happen in the story?
Once your pictures are in the right order, perhaps you could read one of the story segments. Can your child(ren) indicate which picture they think it matches with? Continue to do this until you have the outline of the story.

Have great fun with your children whilst all acting out Winter sights with this set of 8 Winter Activity Challenge cards. Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance!
