Our FREE Fireworks: Colour Checklist Activity is incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years environments:
'Spot the Colour' Activity:
Live Display: If watching a fireworks display (either live or on a recording), give each child a checklist and a pencil. Encourage them to look out for the colours on the chart and tick them off as they see them. This is great for observational skills and colour recognition.
Recorded Display: For a more focused activity, you can watch a recording of a fireworks display and even hit pause to discuss and identify the colours you see.
Physical Sensory Experience:
For a hands-on activity, why not create objects to represent fireworks in a tuff spot or on a trail around your setting/home in the appropriate colours? Children can then tick them off as they find each colour. This combines colour recognition with physical movement and sensory exploration.
Extending Learning:
For children who need extending, you can introduce an element of counting. Instead of simply ticking a box, you can challenge them to count how many times they see each colour.
For older children, this can be extended to an introduction to tally mark making, providing a purpose for this early maths skill.
Fine Motor Skills Development:
The act of ticking a box, writing a number, or drawing a tally mark helps to strengthen hand muscles and improve pencil grip.
-
This engaging resource supports key developmental areas within the EYFS framework:
Mathematics (Number): Children learn to count reliably and make marks for a purpose (tally marks).
Physical Development (Fine Motor Skills): The acts of ticking, writing, and drawing strengthen hand muscles and improve hand-eye coordination.
Communication and Language (Speaking; Listening, Attention & Understanding): Children listen to instructions, engage in discussions about the colours they see, and use descriptive language.
Expressive Arts and Design (Exploring Media & Materials): Children explore and recognise different colours.
