This display/activity is intended to help the child/children identify their emotions and the experiences that trigger those emotions.

At the start of the day, one emotion is to be highlighted and discussed with the children. The children are then encouraged to tell someone if they think they experience that emotion during the day. The aim is for the children to become more introspective of their emotions, and more perceptive of the emotions of others.

As a group activity the children have the chance to learn from their peer’s experiences as well as their own.

Pack includes:

• Changeable display banner with space for different ‘Emotion of the day’ cards.

• Emotion of the day display cards for happy, sad, excited, worried, angry, confused, scared, surprised.

• Small A6 emotion cards to be placed around the setting as a reminder of the ‘Emotion of the day’.

We created this ‘Why is Teddy sad?’ pack in order for you to be able to explore with children how sometimes something may feel wrong inside when there are no obvious cuts, bruises, etc.

As well as investigating the feeling of ‘sadness’ by talking about what might cause us to feel sad and what it actually feels like, this pack could also be a doorway to talking about mental health. It also aids in the mindfulness practice of recognising emotions.

Pack of animal cards with sorting labels. Ideal for use as part of an interactive display or sorting activity or game. Differentiate for use with different ages of children by your selection of activity cards, the vocabulary you use and your use of questioning. You may like to select e.g. the headings ‘4 legs’, ‘2 legs’ and ‘0 legs’. Place them on the floor or a table and discuss with your child(ren) which animal cards should be placed under each of the headings. For some headings such as ‘Eats meat’, ‘Eats plants’ and ‘Eats both’ you may like to create your own venn diagram by using two hoops/looped skipping ropes on the floor or circles on paper which overlap in the middle. The 2 separate components go in each hoop e.g. ‘Eats meat’ and ‘Eats plants’ and the overlapping centre is where both characteristics are true. In this case ‘Eats both meat and plants’. If none of the characteristics mentioned are true for an animal, the animal card may be placed outside of the circles. This sorting activity is a great way to encourage children to observe animal characteristics closely. ‘Our Favourite Animals’ Pictogram Chart pictures and banner designed for children to not only think about their favourite animal, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts. Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place any of the eight large animals on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller animal above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of animals on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like tigers?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like elephants than kangaroos?’ Animals included are: lion, kangaroo, chimpanzee, zebra, elephant, dolphin, tiger and turtle.

These animal sound cards (like our snap cards) are intended to be folded and then laminated to create a more sturdy final product which can be reused many times. Perhaps you could lay the cards face down on the table/floor and take it in turns to select a card. Whoever selects a card must turn it over so that only they can see the animal on the other side. Their challenge is then to make the noise of the animal and everyone else has to guess which animal card they have. Before you play the game you may like to go through the cards together and discuss what sounds you think each animal makes. If you have a group of children you may end up with a few different versions for each animal e.g. some may go for the sounds traditionally taught for each animal (which vary between languages and cultures) and others may go for a more realistic representation of the sounds they have heard the animals make. Have fun exploring animal sounds!

Each animal card folds over to create a card with an animal picture on one side and the initial sound on the other. Children can try to match letters to animals, match pairs of animals with the same initial sound or just pairs of letters.

Here’s a couple of games to try. Why not…

1. Lay out a selection of cards with the animal pictures facing upwards. Invite the children to find a pair of animals which start with the same initial sound. Turn the chosen pair over to see if they are right and model sounding out the letter sound on the back to check if they are right.

Alternatively…

2. Place 3 cards on a table with animals facing upwards (2 which match and one which doesn’t). Encourage the children to decide which one is the ‘odd one out’. Turn over the cards to see if they are right and model sounding out the letters to check.

Set of cards and mats for sorting of nocturnal and diurnal animals. A great addition to your continuous provision for a ‘Nocturnal Animals’ theme. The printables can either be left out as an ‘invitation to play’ or set up as a more adult directed activity. Children may use the materials in a very different way to expected, e.g. for small world role-play using the mats as back drops or as prompts for making animal sounds.

Possible adult directed activity:

Nocturnal animals tally sheet designed for aiding the development of early data representation skills.

Possible adult directed activity:

- Print several sets of the page of animal cards, fold them along the middle and then laminate them, being mindful not to leave pointy corners. (Or use your own nocturnal animal props.) Use the quantity of each animal you think is appropriate for your child(ren).

- Spread the cards out face down. Children to take turns turning over a card and then marking it on their tally chart. When all cards are turned, children to count totals and see which one they turned over the most.

- Variations include placing animals (cards or small world toys) around your setting or in a tuff tray for children to find and then make marks on the tally chart.

Have great fun with your children whilst all acting out Autumn sights with this set of 8 Autumn Activity Challenge cards. Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance! As an extension to our ‘Present Shape Match Cards’, these cards allow children to not only use their observational skills to match the present with its contents, but also write a label for what they think is inside. (Smaller A5 cards also available.)

20 A4 cards/posters are included in the pack; a toy poster with label, plus a wrapped present child activity card to match with each. 10 presents in total. All are intended to be laminated for multiple uses.

Ideas…

• Place the 10 poster cards on display for your child(ren) to see. Give your child/each child one of the 10 activity cards. Encourage them to look at the posters and decide which one they think is inside their wrapped present. Encourage them to experiment with writing the label underneath.

• Alternatively challenge your child(ren) to imagine what they think is inside a present by giving them an activity card without letting them see the posters. This allows for a more open ended problem solving task, plus gives more freedom for children to practice the phonics skills they have at their disposal, by allowing them to sound out the word they have in mind without seeing the written answer.

• For additional differentiation/variation, we have created the poster cards in such a way that you may decide to separate the image and the label to make 2 separate cards out of each poster. This will enable you to allow your child(ren) to only see one or the other if you wish. For example, you may prefer to let them see the images to give them ideas for what may be inside their present, but would like to allow them to use their phonics skills to write the label independently.

Dinosaur themed size ordering pictures. Includes Brachiosaurus, Pterodactyl, Tyrannosaurus Rex, Parasaurolophus, Stegosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Ankylosaurus & Plesiosaur. Intended to be cut out (and ideally laminated) for use by children in repeatable size ordering activities. If you have access to a fuzzy felt board, why not stick velcro tabs on the back so that children can move them around on the board? Alternatively use them as a cut and stick activity (to also strengthen fine motor skills) for the children to take home and discuss with their families using words such as ‘small, smaller, smallest, big, bigger, biggest’.

Dinosaur themed tally chart. Your children will love to use this as part of an out and about hunt activity (for example dinosaurs hidden around your outdoor area) or in conjunction with a 'Dinosaur' themed tuff spot or feely bag. Use as a Tally Chart or Check List. Differentiate expectations for individual children within your care. Some children may simply use it as a visual cue whilst others may begin to make marks resembling tally lines or even numbers. Alternatively ask your children ‘Which is your favourite dinosaur?’ and collect the results as a group. Which dinosaur has the most votes? Perhaps use in conjunction with our ‘Dinosaur Pictogram Chart Activity’.

Dinosaur Pictogram Chart pictures designed for children to not only think about their favourite dinosaur, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts. Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place the four large dinosaurs on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller dinosaur above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of dinosaurs on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like the triceratops?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like the tyrannosaurus rex than the triceratops?’ could be delved into. Please note that pterodactyls were pterosaurs (a type of flying reptile), not technically dinosaurs.

Dinosaur Footprint number line activity from 0 to 10 or 0 to 20. (Both versions included in file.) Print, cut (and laminate if desired) the footprints for a fun floor activity that reinforces number recognition and ordering to ten/twenty. (Take care as to what surface you place the footprints on as children may wish to step on them pretending to be dinosaurs!) Children start the number line with the ‘0’ at the bottom and think about the next number needed until they reach the ‘Roar!’ at the end at number ‘10’ and ‘20’. Extend children further by taking a number out of the completed line and asking children to work out which is missing. Of course these dinosaur footprints 0-20 once cut out could have many other applications. For example why not try hiding them in the garden/outdoor area or in a sand pit for the children to find and identify the numbers? Perhaps you could challenge your children to place the correct number of objects on each footprint?

Easter Egg Hunt Clue Cards designed for you to fill in and place eggs around your setting before game begins. Simply print out the cards that you would like to use (looking carefully at the sentence starter wording at the top of each card) and then write in clues which fit with your setting and children. We designed this activity with following instructions and positional language in mind and so it is intended that you read the cards to the children. Some suggestions for clue writing are included on the first page. We suggest that you hide the second clue with the first egg to be found so that a chain is created.

Explore size and shape with this loose parts investigation. Print both the ‘big’ and the ‘small’ egg. Describe the shapes. Perhaps extend older children by asking ‘How are they similar?’ ‘How are they different?’ With younger children focus on the vocab ‘big’ and ‘small’. Why not investigate how many e.g. duplo bricks or perhaps Easter themed objects you can fit in each and then compare the amounts? Adapt for different ages by using smaller or larger loose parts. Why not involve a tool such as tweezers in the process to develop fine motor skills? For our youngest children these templates could also be used as a stimulus to sort small and big objects…e.g a table of objects with a small and big version of each and the children place the objects next to the appropriate egg.

Colour matching Egg themed memory game. Can be played as suggested as a game to strengthen memory and colour recognition skills or adapted for much younger children to build the foundations of learning colours. For example, line up 4 cards (2 of each colour) and match the pairs together. By making colour the only variable, it makes it easier for children to make the connections in order to categorise colours.
