These endless puzzles are perfect to show the cyclic nature of life cycles. For example in the first instance the frog puzzle may be placed in the order ‘frogspawn’, ‘tadpole’, ‘froglet’ and then ‘frog’. To demonstrate to children that the frog then lays frogspawn, the ‘frogspawn’ piece may be brought to connect with the ‘frog’ piece at the end and thus continuing the cycle. This process can continue for as long as you like, bringing the ‘tadpole’ piece to then end and then the ‘froglet’ piece and so on!

Explore movement with this set of ‘Life Cycle Action Cards’. Prompts for adults to use to describe to children and demonstrate how they may move. Use these ‘Life Cycle Cards’ to inspire children to think about the growth of frog, butterfly and chicken. Ideal for a sub topic within ‘Spring’. These versatile cards are made with a tab which can be folded before lamination in order to strengthen the final product. This also means that when turned over, the picture on the front can not be seen. Why not use these cards as part of a ‘Life Cycles’ display or invitation to play? Can the children match the correct parts of each life cycle and then place them in the correct order? Perhaps the frog, butterfly and chicken could be placed on the table face up and the rest face down. Children could take it in turns to turn over cards and place them next to the correct creature. The cards could also be used as a basis for communication and language development, first naming the cards and then describing. More challenging questions could be e.g. ‘How do you think a butterfly moves?’ ‘How is that different to how a caterpillar moves? ‘

Minibeasts Pictogram Chart pictures designed for children to not only think about their favourite minibeast, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts.
Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place the four large minibeasts on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller minibeast above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of minibeasts on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like the bee?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like the bee than the butterfly?’ could be delved into.

Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to be minibeasts with this set of 8 Minibeast Activity Challenge cards.

Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Minibeasts’ counting puzzles? Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number with the corresponding number of minibeasts. Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges. Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further game, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence. Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the minibeasts, counting as they go.

Minibeast themed tally chart. Your children will love to use this as part of an out and about hunt activity (for example searching for minibeasts in your outdoor area) or in conjunction with a 'Minibeasts' themed tuff spot or feely bag. Use as a Tally Chart or Check List. Differentiate expectations for individual children within your care. These alliteration/tongue twister prompt cards have been designed to encourage your children to have fun exploring and experimenting with initial sounds. Children with your help can be guided to find the initial sound on the object card, for example sounding out ‘b’ as the initial sound in ‘ball’. Can you all think of some descriptive words which start with the sound ‘b’… e.g. ‘bouncing’? Practise saying the phrase you have created, i.e. ‘bouncing ball’. Older children may like to make a string of several words and/or say phrases with increasing speed. Children will enjoy how silly it sounds (and feels) when they try to repeat phrases more and more quickly. 8 cards to this pack.

Even number of children to have a card each and then try to find the person holding the card that rhymes with theirs.
or
Split pack in to two piles with the rhyming pairs split between the two piles. Each child to have a card each from one of the piles. Adult to take cards one by one from the second pile and read it out. Children to recognise if they have the rhyming card to match the adult.

The aim of this activity is for the children to hear the distinct difference between loud and quiet.
Show the Loud and Quiet cards to the children. Explain that when the ‘Loud’ card is raised, they can make lots of loud noises. When the ‘Quiet’ card is raised, they must be completely quiet.
Using a sand timer, start with 20 seconds of ‘Quiet’ followed by 5 seconds of ‘Loud’, then 20 seconds of ‘Quiet’ again.
Repeat or vary as needed.

Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Farm Animals and their Young’ counting puzzles? Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number beside the adult with the corresponding number of young animals.
Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges. In addition each puzzle matches the adult and young and so this allows for another method of self checking.
Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.
Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the baby animals, counting as they go.
In addition, each number is also written as a word. For our youngest children, this adds to learning about text in the environment and how it has meaning. Our oldest children may start to recognise the words and associate them with the numbers. This will be beneficial for when they begin to read and write these words in subsequent years as they will have something to build on.

Cut each puzzle along the line in the middle and invite your children to match each farm animal with its offspring. Why not extend learning by discussing similarities and differences between the older and younger animals and also between the different types of animals? How many spots should Daisy the cow have on her back? Roll the dice to find out! A game to develop number recognition, counting skills, farm animal knowledge, turn taking skills and fine motor control with the placing of the spots. To differentiate for different ages of children you could for example use a 1-3 dice for younger children or extend older children by rolling 2 dice which would require children to do a subtraction equation to find the difference between the two numbers. This would then give them a resulting number of spots to place on the cow. Have fun!

Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place the four large animals on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller animal above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of animals on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like chickens?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like cows than pigs?’ could be delved into.

‘Sleeping Bunnies’ Nursery Rhyme Large Sequence Cards. Useful for an interactive display focusing on ordering events, or an activity with an individual child or large group. The cards could be used as a sequencing activity or teaching prompts to learn the nursery rhyme and focus on its content through visual aids. Younger children will love to explore the rhythm and rhyme of this nursery rhyme and join in, especially with the aid of visual stimulus. Perhaps with older children you might like to highlight the CVC words to practise blending or identify all of the Phase 2 or 3 sounds or high frequency words? For our younger children this nursery rhyme really lends itself to the physical actions of children pretending to be sleeping bunnies and then jumping up and hopping around at the right time! Have fun!
