An Overview of ‘Letters and Sounds - Phase 3’
“Children entering Phase Three will know around 19 letters and be able to blend phonemes to read VC words and segment VC words to spell. While many children will be able to read and spell CVC words, they all should be able to blend and segment CVC words orally.
The purpose of this phase is to teach another 25 graphemes, most of them comprising two letters (e.g. oa), so the children can represent each of about 42 phonemes by a grapheme. Children also continue to practise CVC blending and segmentation in this phase and will apply their knowledge of blending and segmenting to reading and spelling simple two-syllable words and captions. They will learn letter names during this phase, learn to read some more tricky words and also begin to learn to spell some of these words.” Letters and Sounds: Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics

High Frequency / Sight Words
Use this mat in conjunction with any of the high frequency sight word cards in this section.
Place a word card in the top section.
Encourage your child to make the word out of playdough, bricks or loose parts, etc. in the box underneath. This engages your child and requires them to look very closely at how the word looks.
The final box is for those children who are ready to use a pencil (or whiteboard pen if you have laminated the sheet for multiple uses with different words) to write the word.

Phase 3 High Frequency/Sight Words on a Zebra background to form flashcards or part of a display.
A few ideas…
Perhaps you could cut them out and display them on a bedroom wall or perhaps a fridge? Your children may even love to cut out the cards themselves using child scissors, (under appropriate supervision) and this action may help to keep them engaged further. Children may be more likely to be engaged with the activity of reading the card once they have cut it out and placed it onto their own personal display.
Print out 2 different themed packs of the same words and challenge your child(ren) to match the pairs of words and read them once they have found a match. (You can always print more or less cards to a page by altering the settings at your end when you print.)
Use in conjunction with our READ IT, MAKE IT, WRITE IT MAT.
Play ‘Beat the Parent/Teacher’ - who can read or find the word quickest? Make it fun!
Lay out a selection of 4 word cards. Begin with them all starting with different initial sounds, e.g. ‘look’, ‘with’, ‘them’ & ‘down’. Say a word from the selection and challenge your child to find it. This activity focuses in on just the initial sound. As your child becomes more confident you may like to challenge them further by adding a pair which have the same initial sound so that they then are required to read more of the word, e.g. the selection becomes ‘look’, ‘with’ ‘them’ & ‘that’.
Go on a ‘Word Search’ - See if you can find the words in books, environmental text, tablet games, board games, etc.

Phase 3 High Frequency/Sight Words on a Pirate Ship background to form flashcards or part of a display.

Challenge - How many can we read in 1 minute?
Encourage your child to tick words once they feel confident in reading them.
Place counters/bricks/buttons/pasta etc. onto words once they have been read - how many can we cover this time?
Once your child is confident with all of the words why not award them with a certificate from the same theme?
