Why not use this fun farm animals and their young puzzle game to introduce your children to or consolidate their knowledge of farm animals? Cut each puzzle along the line in the middle and invite your children to match each farm animal with its offspring. Why not extend learning by discussing similarities and differences between the older and younger animals and also between the different types of animals? Extend children’s vocabulary by describing animal body parts such as tail, hooves, paws, fur, snout, etc. Ask questions such as ‘Which animal has the longest/shortest tail?’

These endless puzzles are perfect to show the cyclic nature of life cycles. For example in the first instance the frog puzzle may be placed in the order ‘frogspawn’, ‘tadpole’, ‘froglet’ and then ‘frog’. To demonstrate to children that the frog then lays frogspawn, the ‘frogspawn’ piece may be brought to connect with the ‘frog’ piece at the end and thus continuing the cycle. This process can continue for as long as you like, bringing the ‘tadpole’ piece to then end and then the ‘froglet’ piece and so on!

This hedgehog subitising (subitizing) game encourages children to spot the hedgehogs with the appropriate number of dots (in different formations). ‘How quickly can we match all of the hedgehogs to the correct piles of cosy leaves?’
You may want to add an element of challenge with a timer, e.g. ‘Can we get all of the hedgehogs to their safe hiding spots before the timer runs out?’ (We would advise beginning without a timer and then only adding this element to progress the game once children are becoming confident. Start with a time which is definitely achievable.)

Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to be fairies with this set of 6 Fairy Activity Challenge cards.
Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front.
Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together!
Great for physical development, descriptive language, imagination, understanding the world and turn taking.

Pack of animal cards with sorting labels. Ideal for use as part of an interactive display or sorting activity or game. Differentiate for use with different ages of children by your selection of activity cards, the vocabulary you use and your use of questioning. You may like to select e.g. the headings ‘4 legs’, ‘2 legs’ and ‘0 legs’. Place them on the floor or a table and discuss with your child(ren) which animal cards should be placed under each of the headings. For some headings such as ‘Eats meat’, ‘Eats plants’ and ‘Eats both’ you may like to create your own venn diagram by using two hoops/looped skipping ropes on the floor or circles on paper which overlap in the middle. The 2 separate components go in each hoop e.g. ‘Eats meat’ and ‘Eats plants’ and the overlapping centre is where both characteristics are true. In this case ‘Eats both meat and plants’. If none of the characteristics mentioned are true for an animal, the animal card may be placed outside of the circles. This sorting activity is a great way to encourage children to observe animal characteristics closely. The active engagement with the subject matter means they are more likely to retain knowledge for example new vocabulary. Can you think of any other ways to sort these animals? Perhaps you could make your own heading cards?

These animal sound cards (like our snap cards) are intended to be folded and then laminated to create a more sturdy final product which can be reused many times. Perhaps you could lay the cards face down on the table/floor and take it in turns to select a card. Whoever selects a card must turn it over so that only they can see the animal on the other side. Their challenge is then to make the noise of the animal and everyone else has to guess which animal card they have. Before you play the game you may like to go through the cards together and discuss what sounds you think each animal makes. If you have a group of children you may end up with a few different versions for each animal e.g. some may go for the sounds traditionally taught for each animal (which vary between languages and cultures) and others may go for a more realistic representation of the sounds they have heard the animals make. Have fun exploring animal sounds!

Each animal card folds over to create a card with an animal picture on one side and the initial sound on the other. Children can try to match letters to animals, match pairs of animals with the same initial sound or just pairs of letters.
Here’s a couple of games to try. Why not…
1. Lay out a selection of cards with the animal pictures facing upwards. Invite the children to find a pair of animals which start with the same initial sound. Turn the chosen pair over to see if they are right and model sounding out the letter sound on the back to check if they are right.
Alternatively…
2. Place 3 cards on a table with animals facing upwards (2 which match and one which doesn’t). Encourage the children to decide which one is the ‘odd one out’. Turn over the cards to see if they are right and model sounding out the letters to check.

Set up the two sets of animal cards. Choose one of the animals and say its name out loud, e.g. “Owl!”
Then say to the child “Can you find the other owl?”
Help the child through a matching game, whilst reinforcing the names of the animals.

Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Feed the Sparrow’ counting puzzles? Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number beside the sparrow with the corresponding number of hazelnuts to feed them.
Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.
Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further challenge, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.
Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the hazelnuts, counting as they go.
In addition, each number is also written as a word. For our youngest children, this adds to learning about text in the environment and how it has meaning. Our oldest children may start to recognise the words and associate them with the numbers. This will be beneficial for when they begin to read and write these words in subsequent years as they will have something to build on.

Dinosaur Footprint number line activity from 0 to 10 or 0 to 20. (Both versions included in file.) Print, cut (and laminate if desired) the footprints for a fun floor activity that reinforces number recognition and ordering to ten/twenty. (Take care as to what surface you place the footprints on as children may wish to step on them pretending to be dinosaurs!) Children start the number line with the ‘0’ at the bottom and think about the next number needed until they reach the ‘Roar!’ at the end at number ‘10’ and ‘20’. Extend children further by taking a number out of the completed line and asking children to work out which is missing. Of course these dinosaur footprints 0-20 once cut out could have many other applications. For example why not try hiding them in the garden/outdoor area or in a sand pit for the children to find and identify the numbers? Rangoli counting puzzles. Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number with the corresponding number of Rangoli patterns. Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.
Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together? If your children would enjoy a further game, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence. Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Why not set up an invitation to play using these ‘Egg Counting Puzzles’?
Select those appropriate for your children (1-10 available) and allow them to match the number with the corresponding number of eggs. In addition, each number is also written as a word. For our youngest children, this adds to learning about text in the environment and how it has meaning. Our oldest children may start to recognise the words and associate them with the numbers.
