Understanding Number Day (NSPCC) in EYFS & KS1
Let's count our way to helping children! ➕➖ Number Day is an exciting annual fundraising event for schools across the UK, organised by the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children). It typically takes place in early February. The core purpose of Number Day is twofold: to make maths enjoyable and engaging for children of all ages and abilities, and simultaneously to raise vital funds to help the NSPCC protect children from abuse and neglect. Schools often celebrate by encouraging children and staff to dress up in numbers-themed outfits, engage in various maths challenges, and participate in fun, number-related games throughout the day.
For early years settings, nurseries, preschools, childminders, and Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms, this day provides a fantastic and practical theme for exploring mathematical concepts, numeracy skills, problem-solving, counting, and understanding patterns. Crucially, it also offers an opportunity to subtly introduce the concept of charity and helping others in an age-appropriate way. This day offers wonderful planning ideas and inspiration for engaging activities that truly resonate with young minds, making learning about mathematics both exciting and purposeful.
Why Is Celebrating Number Day Important for Young Children?
Number Day helps in fostering a positive attitude towards mathematics, developing foundational numeracy skills, and understanding the concept of making a difference.
Making Maths Fun: Transforms maths from a potentially intimidating subject into an exciting and enjoyable experience, building a positive relationship with numbers.
Developing Numeracy Skills: Provides a dedicated day to reinforce counting, number recognition, simple addition/subtraction, patterning, and problem-solving in engaging ways.
Real-World Application: Shows children how numbers are all around us and how they are used in everyday life.
Charity Awareness: Introduces the concept of helping others and raising money for a good cause (the NSPCC), fostering empathy and social responsibility.
Engagement & Participation: Encourages active participation through themed dress-up and playful challenges, boosting confidence.

Engaging Number Day Activities for EYFS & KS1 (0-7 Year Olds)
Make Number Day a truly exciting and mathematical adventure with these planning ideas and activities perfect for EYFS and KS1 children. The focus is on making numbers fun, active, and meaningful! Many of these early years and year 1 activities can be supported by our extensive 'Mathematics' and 'Counting' resources, as well as various themed number resources.
Here's some inspiration for counting, challenging, and celebrating on Number Day: (Please use your own discretion and knowledge of your children to ensure appropriateness of each activity and safety concerning any materials given and activity undertaken.)
Number-Themed Dress-Up & Show and Tell: Encourage children to come dressed as a number, an item that incorporates number (e.g., a dice, a clock), or with numbers on their clothes. Have a "number show and tell" where they explain their outfit.
Number Hunt: Hide numbers around the classroom or outdoor area for children to find and match.
Counting Challenges:
Themed Counting: Integrate numbers into fun themes. For example, use 'UK Birds Number Slice Puzzles (1-5 & 1-10)', 'Pancake Number Recognition & Counting Multimats', 'Dinosaur Counting Puzzles 1-10', 'and 'Feed The Rabbit Playdough Counting Mats'.

This hedgehog subitising (subitizing) game encourages children to spot the hedgehogs with the appropriate number of dots (in different formations). ‘How quickly can we match all of the hedgehogs to the correct piles of cosy leaves?’
You may want to add an element of challenge with a timer, e.g. ‘Can we get all of the hedgehogs to their safe hiding spots before the timer runs out?’ (We would advise beginning without a timer and then only adding this element to progress the game once children are becoming confident. Start with a time which is definitely achievable.)

Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to be fairies with this set of 6 Fairy Activity Challenge cards.
Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front.
Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together!

Why not set up an invitation to play using these heart puzzles? Select those appropriate for your children (1-20 available) and allow them to match the number with the corresponding number of hearts.
Each pair has a different way of connecting as a puzzle for the children to match and so even if they haven’t learnt what the number looks like yet, but are beginning to say the numbers in order, this can be a fun way to introduce them to new challenges.
Once the puzzles are complete, why not line the numbers up in order and count together?
If your children would enjoy a further game, leave out a number and see if they can spot which one is missing from the sequence.
Puzzles could also be used as a fine motor control/counting activity if left uncut. Children could be given an appropriate number for their learning and encouraged to place objects on the hearts, counting as they go.

Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! Dinosaur themed tally chart. Your children will love to use this as part of an out and about hunt activity (for example dinosaurs hidden around your outdoor area) or in conjunction with a 'Dinosaur' themed tuff spot or feely bag. Use as a Tally Chart or Check List. Differentiate expectations for individual children within your care. Some children may simply use it as a visual cue whilst others may begin to make marks resembling tally lines or even numbers. Dinosaur Pictogram Chart pictures designed for children to not only think about their favourite dinosaur, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts. Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place the four large dinosaurs on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller dinosaur above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of dinosaurs on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like the triceratops?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like the tyrannosaurus rex than the triceratops?’ could be delved into. Please note that pterodactyls were pterosaurs (a type of flying reptile), not technically dinosaurs.

Dinosaur Footprint number line activity from 0 to 10 or 0 to 20. (Both versions included in file.) Print, cut (and laminate if desired) the footprints for a fun floor activity that reinforces number recognition and ordering to ten/twenty. (Take care as to what surface you place the footprints on as children may wish to step on them pretending to be dinosaurs!) Children start the number line with the ‘0’ at the bottom and think about the next number needed until they reach the ‘Roar!’ at the end at number ‘10’ and ‘20’. Extend children further by taking a number out of the completed line and asking children to work out which is missing. Of course these dinosaur footprints 0-20 once cut out could have many other applications. For example why not try hiding them in the garden/outdoor area or in a sand pit for the children to find and identify the numbers? Perhaps you could challenge your children to place the correct number of objects on each footprint?

These versatile butterfly number sheets could be used in a number of ways. Challenge your children to finger paint the right number of marks on each butterfly/wing. Alternatively, use as a playdough mat where the children might like to make the corresponding number of shapes to place on the wings, mould the number at the top or even the entire butterfly. ‘Our Favourite Animals’ Pictogram Chart pictures and banner designed for children to not only think about their favourite animal, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts. Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place any of the eight large animals on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller animal above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of animals on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like tigers?’ may be asked. Nocturnal animals tally sheet designed for aiding the development of early data representation skills.
Possible adult directed activity:
- Print several sets of the page of animal cards, fold them along the middle and then laminate them, being mindful not to leave pointy corners. (Or use your own nocturnal animal props.) Use the quantity of each animal you think is appropriate for your child(ren).
- Spread the cards out face down. Children to take turns turning over a card and then marking it on their tally chart. When all cards are turned, children to count totals and see which one they turned over the most.
- Variations include placing animals (cards or small world toys) around your setting or in a tuff tray for children to find and then make marks on the tally chart.
