Positional Language/Prepositions | EYFS/Early Years activities, Displays and ideas

The words to teach EYFS-aged children in the UK for positional language are generally split into foundational words and more complex terms, aligning with the Development Matters curriculum guidance. The focus is on them demonstrating understanding through actions and later, using the words themselves.

📚 Foundational Positional Words (Ages 2-4 / Nursery & Preschool)

These are often the first words children can understand and respond to instructions for.

  • in

  • on (or on top of)

  • under

  • up

  • down

  • off

  • out (or outside/inside)

📝 Extending Positional Vocabulary (Ages 4-5 / Reception)

As children progress, their vocabulary should be broadened to include more detailed and relative positions. According to Development Matters, children in this age range should be able to: "Discuss routes and locations, using words like in front of and behind."

Key words to introduce and practice include:

  • behind

  • in front of

  • next to (or beside)

  • between

  • near

  • far (or away from)

  • above

  • below

💡 Teaching Strategies

It is important to teach these words practically and in context.

  • Active Games: Use games like "Simon Says" (e.g., "Simon says put the teddy on the chair") or hide-and-seek to practice following instructions.

  • Storytelling: Read books that naturally feature positional language, such as Where's Spot? or We're Going on a Bear Hunt.

  • Block Play/Small World: Encourage children to describe where they are placing toys (e.g., "The car is in the garage," or "The figure is standing next to the tower").
