This mat is designed to engage children in learning about the concept of addition. It serves as a bridge between physically counting objects and writing mathematical equations.
How to use…
• Adult or child can choose numbers to write in the green squares.
• Then child to count out that number of items (e.g. buttons, playdough balls, cotton reels, building blocks) for each large brown box above the corresponding green squares.
• Finally, the child can count all of the items and write the answer in the golden box.
This completes the grid with an addition number sentence, e.g. “3 plus 5 is equal to 8”.
(Buttons are shown as an example – be sure to use risk assessed age-appropriate loose parts as you see fit.)

Handy addition sheets using 2D shapes. Visual representation of shapes allows children to use 1:1 correspondence to count the object and practice writing the correct number in the appropriate box. Alternatively the children could draw the total number of shapes in each box. Also worth a look are our 2D shape cards, shape mats, shape cutting activity and shape walk sheet.

How many Summer themed objects are there altogether? Children learn to find the total number of objects in two groups by counting all of the objects. Simple addition sheets ideal for strengthening 1:1 correspondence counting and number writing skills whilst introducing basic addition principles using words/phrases such as ‘plus’, ‘add’, ‘equal to’, ‘altogether’, etc. For example you may ask ‘How many sandcastles are there altogether?’ or confirm ‘2 plus 2 is equal to 4’. Blank sheets also included.

These cards can be used as they are with pencil/crayons & loose parts or laminated for use with playdough or whiteboard pens. Easy to use, these doubling mats provide a clear representation of the concept of doubling. Simply choose a number appropriate for your child’s level in the top box (e.g. 3), then in this example place 3 loose part objects/playdough spots, pencil/pen marks on one wing and the same on the other. Encourage your child to count the spots using 1:1 correspondence counting and then write the answer 6 in the final box. This shows that double 3 is equal to 6.

Pack contains two separate addition mats. Print off (and ideally laminate) your preferred mat.
Mats are perfect for exploring addition of two quantities. Can be used as a teacher/adult demonstration tool and/or independent activity.
Place loose parts or playdough as buttons on each gingerbread man. Count the buttons and write the corresponding numbers in the boxes below. Count the total number of buttons altogether and write the answer in the final box.
Once children become confident with the idea, an adult may for example write numbers in the first two boxes and encourage children to place the correct number of buttons on each gingerbread man and find the final number independently.

Use a jingle bell or even a paper ball or bean bag to play this target game. Once the targets are printed, cut out and displayed on the floor, children can throw to the targets and say the number their ball/bell lands on. As an extension they could try and add up their scores if they each had more turns!
