This STEM ‘Float and Sink Activity Pack’ includes a variety of resources to help inspire and engage adults and children alike.
The activity card plan breaks down key elements of the activity into sections: You will need, Activity description, Extra challenge, Development Matters statements (from Understanding the World), Key vocabulary, Key questions and Additional resources.
Also included in the pack are various handy printables such as a ‘Family Fun’ homework handout, checklist prompts, relevant word cards, mark making sheets and posters.
In addition, the ‘Sink and Float’ poster within this pack is designed to be used in conjunction with our ‘Science Banners’ pack which includes a space for activity posters from each of the ‘Science Activity Packs’ (of which this is one). The children are to be encouraged to say how many bumblebees there are straight away with no counting. They could use these independently and self-check or the cards could be held up by an adult as part of a group activity.

Use these ‘Growing Bean Cards’ as part of a display or invitation to play activity. Children may enjoy moving the cards around to place them in the correct order to show how the bean grows into a plant. Shrunk down they could become part of an individual take home cut and stick activity with an extension that children could write the numbers 1-6 on each picture to further demonstrate their understanding of the order. ‘Signs of Spring’ cards. Ideal for use as part of a Spring display to visually highlight the changes that happen following Winter. Cards can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language. When used as part of a display or offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the cards in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Younger children may point to familiar objects when prompted e.g. ‘Where’s the tree?’ and learn new words as you describe to them what is in the picture. As children progress, more ground may be covered such as ‘What colours can you see?’, ‘How many ducklings are there in this picture?’, ‘Which is your favourite card?’, ‘Why do you like this picture the best?’, ‘What do you think this tree would look like in the Winter?’, ‘Have you seen any of these signs of Spring?’, ‘Where?’, ‘When?’, ‘Who were you with?’, ‘Shall we go outside and see which of them we can find?’

Have fun with this set of 8 Spring Activity Challenge cards. Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

Great activity to inspire sequencing and listening skills.
Why not start by describing the pictures? Encourage your children to describe what they can see. Do they recognise the characters and objects from the story?
Can your child(ren) help you to place the pictures in the order they happen in the story?
Once your pictures are in the right order, perhaps you could read one of the story segments. Can your child(ren) indicate which picture they think it matches with? Continue to do this until you have the outline of the story.

Ideal for use as part of a Winter display to visually highlight the changes that happen following Autumn. Cards can also be used as a great stimulus for communication and language. When used as part of a display or offered as part of an invitation to play children may initiate communication to you or other children about the cards in a child led fashion. Alternatively, adult led interaction could include closed or open ended questioning. Intended to be cut out (and ideally laminated) for use by children in repeatable size ordering activities. If you have access to a fuzzy felt board, why not stick velcro tabs on the back so that children can move them around on the board? Alternatively use them as a cut and stick activity (to also strengthen fine motor skills) for the children to take home and discuss with their families using words such as ‘small, smaller, smallest, big, bigger, biggest’.

Game cards to scaffold the making of sounds using common items in different ways. This game has been designed to help children to begin to develop an understanding of sounds in the world around them. We purposefully chose objects which would be as easily accessible as possible that might make interesting and varied sounds when manipulated in different ways. A very fun and easy game to play… Choose one blue ‘Object’ card and one orange ‘Action’ card. Then perform the action on the object to create different sounds!

Sound cards with individual imagery and lettering to enable quick recognition in pre-reading children. The cards are designed to encourage the children to have fun exploring vocal sounds they could use to make distinct sounds for each one. Alternatively you could explore objects in the world around which may make these sounds. Once sounds have been assigned to each card, games can be played such as ‘Call and Response’ where an adult may hold up the card to create the sound and the children copy. With the most engaged children you may wish to make more than one sound to create a rhythmic pattern for the children to copy and then encourage them to investigate their own rhythmic patterns!

Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to be zoo animals with this set of 8 Zoo Activity Challenge cards!
Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do? Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance!
Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.
Why not read ‘Dear Zoo’ alongside this activity?!

Consolidate children’s knowledge of zoo animals whilst playing a fun game of snap (or a memory game of ‘picking up pairs’) with this set of large snap cards. The cards are made with a tab which can be folded before lamination in order to strengthen the final product. This also means that when turned over, the picture on the front can not be seen. The cards include a picture of each animal, their footprint silhouette and also their name written in lower case letters. 11 animals included and the file comprises 44 cards in total.
