Our FREE Christmas: Guess the Gift & Label Write Activity is incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years and KS1 environments:
'Guess the Gift' Matching Activity:
Place the 10 'toy posters' on display for children to see.
Give each child one of the 'wrapped present' activity cards.
Encourage them to use their observational skills to match their present with the correct toy poster. This is a great exercise for visual discrimination and problem-solving.
Purposeful Label Writing:
Once a child has matched their wrapped present, they can be encouraged to write the toy's label underneath on the activity card. The cards are laminated, so they can use a whiteboard pen for a reusable activity.
Open-Ended Phonics Practice:
For a more challenging and open-ended task, you can give children a 'wrapped present' card without letting them see the toy posters.
Challenge them to imagine what they think is inside and write a label for it, encouraging them to experiment with their phonics skills to sound out the word they have in mind.
Differentiation/Variation:
The 'toy posters' are designed in such a way that you can cut the image and the label to make two separate cards.
This allows you to offer further differentiation: you may wish to let children see the images to give them ideas for what may be inside their present, but would like them to use their phonics skills to write the label independently.
-
EYFS Framework:
Literacy (Writing): Children use their mark-making and early writing skills to write labels for a purpose. They learn to represent their ideas with letters and sounds.
Communication and Language: Children listen to instructions, engage in discussions about the presents, and articulate their guesses and writing choices.
Mathematics (Shape, Space and Measure - indirectly): Children use their observational skills to match the shapes on the cards.
Physical Development (Fine Motor Skills): The acts of matching, pointing, and writing with a whiteboard pen strengthen hand muscles, improve dexterity, and enhance hand-eye coordination.
-
KS1 Curriculum:
English (Writing; Phonics): Children learn to write for a specific purpose (a label) and apply their phonics knowledge to sound out and spell words.
Art and Design: Children explore and appreciate the visual designs on the cards.
