Our FREE 'Happy Hanukkah' Greeting Cards are incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years and KS1 environments:
Focused Adult-Led Activity: Use a specific card template as a starting point for a discussion. For example, use the Menorah card to talk about the story of Hanukkah and the miracle of the oil. Use the 'Love & light' card to discuss kindness and how it can be shared with others.
Child-Led Invitation to Play: Leave a selection of the templates and various colouring tools (crayons, pencils, felt-tips) in a continuous provision area. This allows children to choose a card that interests them and explore the theme at their own pace.
Fine Motor Skills Development: The act of carefully colouring and decorating the cards helps to strengthen hand muscles, improve pencil grip, and enhance hand-eye coordination.
Vocabulary Building: As children colour, an adult can use the opportunity to introduce and repeat new vocabulary related to Hanukkah, such as 'Menorah' and 'Dreidel'.
Literacy Connection: The pre-written greetings on the cards offer exposure to sight words and meaningful text, aiding early literacy development. Children can also be encouraged to write their own name or a simple message inside.
Gift-Giving & Appreciation: The finished cards make wonderful, heartfelt gifts for children to give to family and friends. This activity reinforces the value of giving and sharing.
-
EYFS Framework:
Expressive Arts and Design: Children explore and use a range of media and materials, developing their own ideas and expressing creativity through colouring and decorating their cards.
Physical Development (Fine Motor Skills): Colouring and drawing on the cards helps to develop precise hand movements, strengthen pencil grip, and enhance hand-eye coordination.
Communication and Language (Speaking; Listening, Attention & Understanding): Children listen to new vocabulary and stories, engage in discussions about the symbols, and articulate their thoughts.
Understanding the World (People, Culture & Communities): Children learn about a different faith and cultural festival, broadening their understanding of the world.
-
KS1 Curriculum:
Art and Design: Children use drawing to develop and share their ideas and experiences. They can explore colour and line to bring the images to life.
Religious Education / Understanding the World: Children learn about a significant Jewish festival and its customs and symbols.
English (Reading; Writing - indirectly): Exposure to the greetings on the cards helps with word recognition. Writing their own name or a message provides a meaningful context for writing.
PSHE: Supports discussions around expressing kindness, appreciation, and respecting different cultural celebrations.
