Variety of Paths: The mats offer different types of dotted lines (e.g., wavy, zig-zag), providing a range of challenges for children to follow with their pencils.
(Note: Please use your own discretion and knowledge of your children to ensure appropriateness of each activity suggested on this page and safety concerning any materials given and activity undertaken.)

Our FREE Christmas: Epiphany Pencil Control Activity Mats are incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years environments:
Pencil Control Practice: Provide children with a variety of mark-making tools (pencils, felt-tips, crayons) and encourage them to carefully trace the dotted lines. This is an excellent, focused activity for strengthening the muscles in the hand and developing the control needed for writing.
Topic Introduction: Use the mats as a visual aid when introducing the story of the Epiphany. As children trace the lines, you can tell them about the journey of the Wise Men and how they followed the star to find Jesus.
Reusable Activity: Print and laminate the mats. Children can then use a whiteboard pen to trace the lines, allowing the activity to be completed multiple times. This is great for a continuous provision area.
Fine Motor Skills Development: The repetitive act of tracing different patterns helps to improve hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness, which are vital pre-writing skills.
-
EYFS Framework:
Physical Development (Fine Motor Skills): Children develop good control and coordination in handling tools and making precise movements.
Expressive Arts and Design: Children explore mark-making and appreciate the visual quality of the finished paths they have traced.
Communication and Language: Children listen to the story of the Epiphany and can describe the different lines they have traced.
Understanding the World (People, Culture & Communities): Children learn about a different faith and cultural festival, broadening their understanding of the world.
