Our FREE Halloween Character: 2-Piece Puzzles Activity is incredibly versatile and can be used in a multitude of ways across various early years environments:
Focused Activity:
Print and laminate the puzzles for durability. Cut them out and mix them up on a tray or table.
Encourage children to find the matching pieces. You can ask questions like, "Can you find the two pieces that make the witch?", "What colours can you see on the pumpkin?", or "Do these two pieces look the same?". This helps them to spot similarities and differences and recognise colours and patterns.
Problem-Solving Practice: Puzzles are a fantastic tool for developing early problem-solving skills. Children need to think logically about how the pieces fit together and what the completed image will look like.
Halloween Vocabulary Learning: As children complete each puzzle, you can use the opportunity to introduce or reinforce the name of the Halloween character.
Child-Led Invitation to Play: Leave the puzzles out in a continuous provision area. Children may naturally be drawn to the activity and begin to solve the puzzles independently or collaboratively with their peers, promoting teamwork and communication.
Fine Motor Development: The act of picking up and manipulating the puzzle pieces strengthens hand muscles and improves hand-eye coordination.
-
This engaging activity supports key developmental areas within the EYFS framework:
Mathematics (Shape, Space and Measure): Children learn to match and manipulate shapes, and solve problems involving spatial reasoning.
Communication and Language (Speaking; Listening, Attention & Understanding): Children listen to instructions, engage in discussions about the pictures, and use new vocabulary.
Physical Development (Fine Motor Skills): The act of picking up and manipulating the puzzle pieces strengthens hand muscles and improves hand-eye coordination.
