Set of 12 cards (6 colours). Use appropriate number of cards for your children in an invitation to play or adult led activity.

These cards may be used in a number of ways. Placed facing up on a table, children can simply match up the pairs placing them next to each other or alternatively, they may want to collect them as they go.

A further challenge could be a memory and turn taking game of ‘Picking up Pairs’. The cards are made with a tab which can be folded before lamination in order to strengthen the final product. This also means that when turned over, the pattern on the front can not be seen.

Have great fun with your children whilst all pretending to do different actions relating to colours with this set of 8 Colour Activity Challenge cards. Colours include: red, yellow, blue, green, orange, black, brown & white.

Perhaps children could stand in a circle around the pile of cards and take turns to pick one for everyone to do. Cards could equally be shrunk down and placed on a key ring to take out on adventures or featured on an indoor or outdoor display board and referred to with everyone carrying out the activity on floor space in front. Once the children get to know the cards they will be able to relate the action to the picture without necessarily needing the card read to them...For example an adult may be able to simply hold up a card and everyone will be able to do the activity together! For those children who are exceptionally engaged, these cards explored in sequence could even be set to music as a dance performance!

Great for physical development, descriptive language, understanding the world and turn taking.

For example children may like to independently select a colour and search for matching colours around the setting/house. In group activities an adult may ask questions and encourage children to find the right colour on their fan and hold it up so that the adult may quickly see who has secure understanding and who may need more support.

'OUR FAVOURITE COLOURS' PICTOGRAM CHART
'OUR FAVOURITE COLOURS' PICTOGRAM CHART

‘Our Favourite Colours’ Pictogram Chart pictures designed for children to not only think about their favourite colour, but also realise that others may not have the same favourite. In addition, children begin to learn about simple graphs and charts. Ideal for use in a classroom, preschool, nursery or childminder setting. Children do not have to necessarily complete the activity at the same time, but a chart can be added to a display and individual children can add their own favourites at appropriate times. Simply place any of the eight large colour splats on the first page in a horizontal line to form the base of the chart and children can add their own favourite smaller colour splat above to create the vertical lines of a chart. The lengths of the lines can be compared and number of colour splats on each can be counted to find totals. Questions such as ‘How many children like red?’ may be asked. To really extend mathematical thinking, questions such as ‘How many more children like yellow than blue?’ Colours included are: red, yellow, pink, purple, orange, brown, green & blue.

About ‘Holi’

Holi is a vibrant Hindu festival known as the Festival of Colours, celebrated primarily in India and Nepal, as well as in many other parts of the world with Indian communities. It marks the arrival of spring, the triumph of good over evil, and is a time for joy, unity, and forgiveness.

When is Holi Celebrated?

Holi is observed on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Hindu month of Phalguna, which typically falls in March each year.

How is Holi Celebrated?

  • Holika Dahan (The Bonfire Night) 🔥 (Night Before Holi)

    • People light bonfires to symbolise the burning away of evil, inspired by the legend of Holika and Prahlad.

  • Rangwali Holi (Colour Festival) 🎨 (Main Day)

    • People throw coloured powders (gulal) at each other.

    • Water balloons and water guns (pichkaris) are used for fun.

    • Music, dance, and feasting bring communities together.

  • Festive Foods 🍡

    • Special sweets like gujiya (sweet fried dumplings with dry fruits & khoya), thandai (spiced milk drink), and malpua (sweet pancakes) are enjoyed.

Why is Holi Celebrated? (Mythological Significance)

  1. Victory of Good Over Evil – Based on the legend of Prince Prahlad, a devotee of Lord Vishnu, who was saved from his evil aunt Holika.

  2. Krishna and Radha’s Love – Lord Krishna, known for playing with colours, started the tradition of Holi with Radha and the Gopis.

Modern Relevance

Holi today is a festival of joy, unity, and letting go of past grievances. It is celebrated not just by Hindus but by people from various backgrounds who enjoy the fun and spirit of the festival.
